Functionally, I've heard nothing but excellent reviews. I've looked into Henry rifles lately as well.
At one time, I believe, Henry used some plastic parts (front sight and/or barrel band) on their 22's, but don't think that's the case now?!
The receiver is COVERED by either a brass shield or the blued version. The receiver is SEPERATE from these shields and is screwed into place.
Order their catalog from their website for free. Has alot of good pictures and some descriptions.Comment

I have a H001L (I think that's the model no.) carbine with the large loop that I picked up a couple of years ago new for under $200. It's a very compact gun, and seems almost too thin and light, but it shoots great and is made in the US out of metal and wood. I'm not a fan of the sights, but I'll make do until someone comes out with something durable and cheap (I don't feel like putting a $150 tang-mounted peep sight on a rifle that gets dropped on occasion.) That said, I don't think I've ever cleaned the thing, and it's never failed to go bang when I want it to.Comment

I own a Henry Golden Boy in .22lr and it is a great gun. I believe the H001 is the basic version with a round barrel and plastic parts. The H001T model has a octagonal barrel with all metal parts. I wanted to clarify that the reciever is not blued but in fact it is painted. Good luck with your choice and have fun with your grandson.
In addition to Calguns, Rimfire Central is a great site for rimfire information.

I have the H001T that I think you refer to. With the barrel weight it is a little front heavy for the smaller 13yr old but might be fine for a beefier boy. I would go with the round barrel. They don't cost much get one of each. Good rifle lots of fun great plinker.

Henry .22's
If your grandson is on the younger side it may be a little heavy. But then boys do grow and he'll be comfortable with it until he passes it on. Hard to beat such a gift from your Grandfather! It was my Grandfather who introduced me to shooting all those years ago and I still treasure the memory.
Semper Fi!

I have the large loop carbine, it's an outstanding gun, he will love it. Henry is a USA company, their guns are made with all USA parts, and is the smoothest lever action out of the box I have ever shot. I have never had to use their customer service, but it is reputed to be excellent. I have emailed them with questions from time to time, the President of the company emails back with the answers. They do have plastic barrel bands, but that has never bothered me, if it ever does I will order some metal ones from Henry._________________________________Originally posted by KestryllYou're boned.

I have an H001 and H001M. I currently shoot the H001 more than any of my other firearms. I've already dinged up the wood a bit (another gun fell on it), so be careful with the fancy wood on the H001T. Frankly, for a kid, I'd get either the H001 or the Golden Boy.Comment

I have the H100T, it's a good shooter haven't really gave my any trouble. Only thing is, I dropped it out of the truck one time and that more less knocked the iron sight off zero and I can't get it to zero again, so I just mount a scope on it and called it a day. Aside from that it's been perfect for me.Comment
