I bought my son's .22. Now it is time for mine. I was thinking of the S&W mod 41. Read a little on it and wanted input. Price is high, but so is everything of quality. My other preliminary option is Rugers 45/22. I do want a pistol.

It depends on what you want to do with the pistol.

Do you want to shoot very accurately? If so, then I'd get the M41. Although more expensive, but they hold their value really well. Also simple to field strip/change barrels. Parts and excellent gunsmithing are widely available due to their popularity in bullseye shooting.

Do you just want to shoot cheap .22LR rounds? In this case, just get the Ruger because the M41's increased accuracy probably won't be realized. The Ruger is more compact and easier to carry to the range... not to mention a lot cheaper.

own one w/7 inch barrel & no scope required to be extremely accurate
it's not what i'd consider barrel heavy
online you should be able to locate one for 500-750$ used. i've only seen one @ 500 & that was over 6 months ago.
this pistol will outlive you, your son & any grandchildren that are likely to be in your future
it's a poor mans version of a hammerli or some other high dollar target pistol & does the job equally or sometimes better than the more expensive brands
with most any higher dollar weapon it's usually operator error vs. the pistol

I'm in the market too. Shot a mod41 in bullseye twice in the last week. Reliable and easy to use. Controls in the usual place. I have seen them on GunBroker for $800.

The $650 one (second link) is better. The $517 one has the older millet sight which is not as good as the newer sights on $650. Also, the older one may not be pre-drilled/tapped for scope base.

Oh, I should also add that those prices are the current bids.... the actual sell price will be in the $800 range based on M41 pricing. The poster above, who got an M41 for $650 w/ scope is not what I would think a common occurance.

I've had my model 41 since 1975. paid $300 for it. I would not sell it for 3 times the price!

Guys what you see on Gunbroker are bids. A buy now price exist as does a reserve. Most of these are not sold but re-listed. Today $700 is a bargain. New retail is over $1200 and usually they go for $900 or so plus shipping and transfer plus the dros. I was one of the lucky ones. found one about a year ago LNIB with the box and even the original paper the gun and magazine came wrapped in for $640 plus tax and dros. Haven't been even close to a deal like that as I am always looking for a second 41.

Not trying to start a war. Are the new m41's as well made as the older one? I am sure either one with out live me.

Lots of fodder on the subject old vs. new. I have shooter friends with old and new and they notice no difference as do I in the shooting capabilities. Some say that the bluing is better on the old but I haven't seen enough older models to compare. I am not sure on this but I have heard the grips used to be real wood and are now laminate but I haven't confirmed this. Mine is '98 or so and has had only three failures in 10,000 rounds this last year.

I think there are 3 groups: old, not-that-old, new. I can't remember too well, but I hear the not-that-old ones are not good which is one of the gun broker's links above. I also hear old and not-that-old ones don't interchange the new barrels too well.

Personally, I think the new ones are great. I got my first M41 (new model) for smallbore pistol shilouette and tested it at 100 yards and got 3" groups out of it; I was impressed. I think it can do better if I had a better rest and higher powered scope (only had 7x scope).

S&W Model 41

I just got mine about a month ago. Fortunately, I was able to order it direct from S&W under the discount program for military/LE personnel. It is a pistol I had been yearning for for many years. The Model 41 is simple to maintain/clean and deadly accurate unlike some of the other popular .22 pistols. For about the last 15 years or so, the Model 41 has been made in Houlton, ME vs. Springfield, MA.

Mine is vintage '98 by serial #. I bought a 7" barrel recent and it fit up with just a little polishing some rough spots. Mine shoots tight and functions with only three total stovepipes since I broke it in and one FTF, ammo related. this in 10,000 rounds. I would consider mine not so old. but maybe some consider it new. I am very happy I bought it and would by another if I could find another deal. It is the best 22 semi auto I own of the four. Nothing else feels or shoot like the 41.

any drilled top end devalues the weapon considerably
i know that scopes are sometimes needed, but try & figure out a way to mount w/out having to drill
