    .22 rifle

My last post worked so well I thought I try to get more advise. I want to get my sons a .22 rifle. Don't want a semi auto. Pump, bolt, or lever. What have you guys had success with? Got to go to work.
    Thanks,

    How about a sling shot..
You can just put the rounds in that and shoot the whole round off.

Is this the response you were looking for

I guess all you are left with is a break action!

So I take it you want a single shot. A quality one might be hard to find. I have my first rifle, a 22 that shoots shorts, long and long rifle. It is a bolt with a pull back firing pin, single shot made by Sears back in 1964. Still got it and it still shoots. Simple design and crappy parts but hey it never failed to fire. I had ammo left at the end of the day and the boys with semi autos, at that time most with tubes iirc, shot up their boxes in under an hour. I became a way better shot knowing each shot had to count as i usually didn't get another.

Chipmunk rifles are single shot bolt actions, and are the ideal action type with which to teach a new shooter. The design requires that the bolt be op

Looks to me like he's saying he wants anything but a semi-auto.

My friend just bought a Cricket (.22LR single-shot bolt-action) for her daughter.

How old and big is your son? Where are you located in Socal? You should get him a rifle that fits him now. That way, he will learn how to shoot properly. You can always get him new ones as he grows. The Crickets and Henry's rifles are great for a small shooter. My first gun was a single shot, lever action Ithica. They can still be found used for under $100. If he is 10-15 years old, I might be willing to sell you my Remington 513J (J for Junior). If you are close enough to me and interested in the 513J, I'd prefer to have you and your son meet me somewhere and let him try it before you buy it. Or, if you are interested in having him shoot .22s with different types of action, we could do that too. Then, you would know what type of action he prefers. Just shoot me a PM if you are interested. I have to completely disagree with mikengracie's comment that quality single shots are hard to find. He obviously does not know that many of the super high end .22s are single shot!

maybe I'm a little touchy, because I learned English as a second language. sometimes I have to read something a couple of times to figure out what is being said/asked...to see if I'm just not understanding it or if it isn't being written clearly

                    Thanks all.

Posting in a hurry is never a good idea. My point was, I wanted my (13 year old) to learn the fundamentals, not spray and pray. If I were more patient and knowledgeable he would get a muzzle loader. I am in SoCal;however, a little far from Canyon Country. Thanks all the same.

I taught my stepson how to shoot when he was 11. He started out with bolt guns and proved that he could make every shot count. Then, he quickly advanced to double tapping semis and shooting beltfed guns along with shooting 50BMGs in 1000 yard matches. He could not miss the little red pig at 600 yards at Angeles with my 50. In the end, his favorite rifle was a .45cal TC frontstuffer! I'd say go with a charcoalburner and a .22lr rifle!

I started my kids on the Ruger 10-22 with a scope on it just to build confidence, when they were young....about 8 or so. Then I wanted to teach them iron sights and used a Mossberg 44 US bolt action rifle I got off a forum member for $200. I have since gotten quite a few rimfire surplus rifles from the Civilian Marksmanship Program over the years and the Remington 513T series is nice. They have incomplete Mossberg 44 rifles still for $65 if you're qualified to order from them. Those will need sights and may need a few other small parts to get up and running. They also have some rusty (minimal to no rust from what I keep reading) for $400 and that is a new rifle with a potential for some rust.

                          Two birds one stone.

I have four boys. I am teaching them one at a time (certain aspects I will have a quailified instructor teach.) I am running a little late, and my oldest
                          (16) has a busier schedule than I. Girls and football. Don't worry he will be on the range soon enough. I will get a rifle that is impossible to wear out and I want, so once they are "proficent" I can keep it. I don't know what is worse; wanting to keep the gun or waiting this long. Hopefully we can still be a shooting family.

I had tech my two sons and many of his friend on how to shoots. I always start them on a bolt gun first without a magazine first, then gradually working into either a 5 rounds or 10 rounds magazine. I don’t like tube type magazine because IMO is unsafe because is hard to tell is there any ammo left in the tube. Any quality bolt gun such as Ruger (77/22) CZ 452, Remington, and Savage will do the trick. Have fun

In the $200-300 price range I really like the Henry H001 lever and Savage MKII. You can get a Malin 981 for under $200.
