"Stick" 22's

I don't know what else to call them - those skinny 22s, generally made from the 20's to the late 50's. Rem 12, Savage 19 or Winchester 69 for example. having all the hi tech or big boomer stuff I'm thinking about getting something basic. Doesn't make any difference if it's bolt or semi, lever or pump so long as it's not single shot.

Any suggestions?

If you're looking for an older .22, I'd say a Winchester 1906 model, or one of the later Winchester versions whose model numbers I can't remember right now.

They are pump action, small, breakdown models that are a blast to shoot. The feeding tube will hold 10 .22lr and have open iron sights. They won't be as accurate as a 10/22 with a scope, but I've found them to be accurate out to about 50 yards, and a lot of fun.

Being a breakdown model they would easily fit into a backpack.

Winchester 1890 22LR, great if you can find one. They come with an octagon barrel and have a super smooth action.

I'm leaning towards some kind of slide action. I have a Browning takedown but it's a 70's version and a Win 03 copy Taurus, for some reason I'm liking the Savage - not too expensive and so darn ugly it's neat.

+1 for any gallery gun! I wish that I hadn't felt the need to sell my 1890 back in the mid 80's. I still have a few 1906s though. They are great guns and a real blast to shoot.

Or get an old Mauser trainer or drop $2500 on an old Winchester 52...
