I started on a single shot pellet gun for basic safety and control, and then got a .22. I recommend the remington nylon 66. I know its old, but it was easier than that pellet gun to use. It is tube fed, or single shot (.22lr) and to make sure it's empty, all you do is unlock the tube in the butt of the gun and slide it once to eject on from the chamber. The iron sights are great. The safety is easy to reach while not easily bumped and switched, it is reasonably light weight and short. Mine is a target rifle (chrome barrels don't hide well.) But they are good varmint guns also.

+1 on the bolt action. It was my first when I was 7 and i've still got it 20 years later.
