    What's after a 22?

I've been shooting a 22 for about a year now and although I love the cheap ammo and negligible recoil, I hate how a small breeze will affect the trajectory.

I thought about a 17 HMR but from what I understand, it suffers the same issues regarding wind.

If I wanted to move up, what would be the next logical choice in caliber?

my training from when i was 12 till now started with a bolt action 22 then a 10/22 then a 12 ga then a 22 pistol then a center fire rifle then a 9mm pistol

the 12 ga helps you learn how to handle kick without punishing you with big misses shooting hand thrown clays

but i think you are not comming from where i am thinking

so yea a 223 is a good step up unless you would like to try a 30-30 in a levergun thats also a good step up

what is the intent of the cartridge. .223 would be good for another bolt gun and learning but without knowing what the job is it's hard to select the right tool

What do you want it to do ... ?

If you only have a .22 then you don't need another rimfire rifle ...
So get either a .223/5,56 or a 12 Ga depending on whatever you want it for.

Since you have the ammo for the .22 then I would suggest an AR -.223/5,56- platform with a .22 conversion kit.

All kidding aside, I'd go .223 or .243 for shooting as you'll be able to find ammo anywhere and with the .243 you can hunt some deer with it if you're into that.

              .223

I started out with a ruger 10-22 for rifles. Then after awhile I built an m4. I shoot and use both a lot. I love the M4 in that it can handle 100-200 yards range without much problems. But I also continue to use my 10-22 for plinking which I found helps practice my marksmenship skills and carries over to when I use the m4.

                223. not TOO expensive. but definitely not cheap to shoot either.

I like my 17hm2, but its a light bullet

Get a Mosin Nagant 91/30. The gun and the ammo are both cheap(er). If you don't like it, sell it here. You are already on the slippery slope to more guns, just go with it.

Fifty??? +1 for the Mosin, the ammo is still cheap and the recoil is tremendous. Why not go to one of the next build parties, and build an awesome AK for less then 400 bucks? There is a ton of Mil Surp ammo for 20-25 cents a round, laying all over the place.

What he said-5.56/.223, if you can afford the ammo-lol. For pistol caliber, you can move up to 9mm. Good luck.

I agree with .223 for rifles. That was how I learned - I think it's a good step - you don't have to change your mindset because of a big increase in the kick - and you don't end up with 'trigger pull' bad shots. As for pistols, I'm not sure 9mm is a good baby step. The 22 ruger I shot really didn't have any kick at all, but 9mm's hurt my hands sometimes. I end up shooting low if I go from 22 to 9mm, because I get scared of the recoil. Maybe .380?
