Looking to purchase a 22lr, and want some advice, from owners.

If your best freinds former roomate owns this, or that, stfu.
Sorry, I want first hand experience before I lay down this much cash for a fricken 22.


Why should I avoid the m&p 15/22 ?

what do you recommend?

This one seems very good, and it is on sale this weekend for 499, which is 100 off anywhere I have seen it.
I thought it felt too plastic, untill I aimed it, and moved around with it @ the store. The sights seemed great, and the weight was perfect. Spring is coming, and we are overrun by ground squirrels. i need a solution, and tomorrow, or Saturday the wait for pickup will start.


Feedback please, positive, negative, or whatnot from firsthand experience please.

I own an MP 15/22 and a Colt 22. The MP is my first pick, its lite, aims fast accurate (no more accurate then the Colt) easy cleaning and just Fun to shoot!! I would buy another and another and another. I used it in our Run n Shoot experiment and it was awesome.

To the OP, your attitude sucks.
But I can get past it. You say you will shoot ground squirrels. Will you be walking fields or shooting from a stationary rest or moving platform such as a truck bed? How long are your shooting sessions and how much will you have to carry on your person? How long is the average shot and the farthest shot?
The answers to these questions will go a long way to helping you decide what type of gun you need to buy.

For stalking the MP15-22 would be great set up with the proper sling, ammo carrier and magazine pouches. Other options would be a 10/22 set up with a factory or other lightweight barrel and lightweight stock and sling. I would use a red dot sight or a low power magnifying optic, or a red dot in conjunction with a magnifier if you don't mind the considerable extra weight.

For stationary shooting from a rest, I would not use it. Instead, I would get a solid boltgun such as a CZ, Ruger, Marlin, etc. Due to the ability to take longe shots I would get a 3-9 or a 4-12 or 6-18 power scope on the gun, and a bipod.

For mixed use, I would probably get a 10/22 with a 3-9 scope, bipod and sling, and would try to keep the rig under 9.0lbs.

Just my opinion. I own 7 custom 10/22s most well over $1k and at least one over $3k, a GSG5 full custom job, an MP15-22, CZ452 Varminter, Remington 541THB, Winchester 52D, BSA Int'l MkII, and have owned MANY others so I have some experience to base the above opinion. I also have hunted ground squirrels in CA using both methods with success. The equipment needed is significantly different in each case so think it through.

I have 2 M&P15-22s, the first one is an early gun and has been falwless thru 2K rounds. I bought the 2'nd one in January because I like the factory installed flash suppressor. These are beautifully designed and executed rifles. The controls and takedown are exactly like any centerfire AR. I highly recommend the M&P15-22.

MP 15/22

Have sold 10 of these out of my shop since they came out. Yes they do kind of feel 'plasticy', but they shoulder well and have only heard good coments about the factory sights. Only complaint so far was the wait to get them, and the difficulty getting extra mags.

As another option, check out the SIG SG522. Way better feel than the S&W and is made with a metal receiver and a plastic lower. The new rifles coming from the factory are now equipped with iron sights; mine wasn't when I first bought it. The S&W 15-22 is a good rifle, but IMHO, they used WAY too much plastic on this for the price they are charging.

I don't agree, too many people tend to take ownership of experience they read and post as if they did own it or do it.... That said, I've never own any of the AR 22lr, what I do own is the 10/22 and the Sig522, the only thing I do not like about the Sig522, is the mag tends to stick in the gun and takes effort to get out. Outside of that, I can see complaints of iron sights , this does not matter for me as I have 4x optics on it.

for me the most important fact is the gun functions with all types of ammo and both the 10/22 and Sig522 work with Rem Golden Bullets, Win HV 36grn, Fed CMP , etc...
Next, I forgot to mention, the Sig522 has the best 22lr triggers I've ever felt, my 10/22 has a $180 aftermarket custom trigger, but the sig still feels better.
10/22 would be perfect but might not have the tacticool effect you are looking for

i got mine in december and it's a lot of fun. everything functions like a standard ar. most ar parts are also interchangeable. i did have to send it back to s&w but the entire repair was free and i got 2 free mags.

I am sorry it sounded like my attitude sucks, I wanted real, firsthand experience. 500 is not alot for a firearm, however, for me, it is alot of money for killing the squirrels that are destroying some landscape, and undermining a couple of hills around my house that could bankrupt me, literally! This is NOT a little problem, these bastards are destructive! They cause a ton of erosion, and where I live, we get 30-40" of rain a year, please dont underestimate they problem...I trid poison, traps, smoke bombs...


Anyway, back on track. You all have made up my mind, the purchase will be tomorrow morning, even convinced the wife, the extra 200 bucks over a standard 10/22 is worth it.

I will be shooting from my deck, distances are 5 yards, to maybe 50 yards max. all from shoulder, no rests.

If your purpose for the 22lr is squirrels, why don't you save money and get a better rifle and get a Ruger 10/22. They are very accurate and fun too shoot. Not as tactical looking but it speaks for itself and it will get the job done. But as far as the M&P 15-22 goes, it is a very nice rifle and fun to shoot. It's light but built solid and with quality. It's just like a true AR. It has a nice trigger and very reliable. I currently don't feel like any rifle in .22 is worth paying over $500 for, but if I were to buy one, the M&P15 would be my first choice followed by the Sig 522.

The OP has a valid point although the delivery was somewhat unpolished. When I post on these forums asking for experiences I simply ask for "firsthand experiences only please" and that cuts down on the noise.

I shopped for the latest round of AR looking .22's including Smith, Colt and Ruger and ended up building my own which is an option as well. While I only spent a little more than buying one from Turners I got a real AR which is a more flexible platform in the end and had fun doing it.
