    .22lr rifle purchase question

I know I just did a 10/22 thread and received some good info, but Remington and Marlin were also mentioned.

Can I get some input from those with experience on these two brands for a semi auto .22 rifle. As I said in the other thread, I don't want a new 10/22 due to the way they are built now, but I've heard the new Remington and Marlins are pretty decent and are at a good price point.

Again, my purpose is for just shooting at the range and teaching my grandkids. I don't intend to radically modify it like some do with the Ruger. Nor do I intend to compete with it.

    So, any help please. Thanks.

Big 5 routinely has Marlins (795's I think) on sale for about 160. Haven't heard anyone complain about them, but don't own one myself.

      yep

I got one for my girlfriend. Its a really cheap gun that feels very "unfinished". But its accurate and lightweight, and that's all I needed for her. I like aftermarket stuff, so im a die hard 10/22 fan.

Accurate and light, but feels kind of cheap to me as well.
The 60 feels better to me, the 10/22 has the best feel.

my buddy just picked up a 795 from big 5.

we took it to reed's and shot all 555 out of the winchester bulk pack in about an hour. no break in, no pre-shoot cleaning, no nothing. we only had one jam/FTF due to what i think was a mag feed issue.

pretty accurate (my buddy got 2 inch groups at 20ish yards w/ the stock iron sights) and the bolt lock feature is nice.

nice gun. i almost wish i would have bought a 795 semi instead of dropping double on a savage mark 2 bolt (still nice gun).

my only complaint is the give in the trigger causing a bit of a jerk in the shooting motion (the savage accutrigger spoils me) but for learning how to shoot you can't beat the price of the marlin 795

10/22 has a MASSIVE AFTERMARKET for anything related to a 10/22.

and I have yet to break my 10/22 as it has eaten hundereds .22 bricks.

I have a Marlin 795, Have probably 2000 rds through it. Cleaned it once, tookit to my second Appleseed and made Rifleman with it. Totally stock, except Tech-sights. Stock sights are pretty bad. Here is a good aftermarket sight: http://www.williamsgunsight.com/gunsights/rifle1.htm

All of these guns for $200 +/- are good for the money they cost, it is just that simple. If you goal is to just shoot it and not turn it into a project then buy the cheapest one you can find and don't look back.

That's my opinion, I made it myself!

i dont think you can go wrong with a ruger 10/22 shoots thousands in a row with nothing more than a wipe down and a bore snake.

I like my Marlin 795. I've always said its pretty much a BB gun that shoots .22LR, and feels exactly like one, so in my opinion its a great starter rifle. Its decently accurate out of the box (I can generally stay in the black at 50 yards), very cheap, and works well. Plus its low maintainance and easy to clean with its synthetic stock and basic parts (stock, barreled receiver, trigger group, and action...thats about it). The first time I shot it I had a few failure to ejects, but I changed ammunition and haven't had a problem since. The trigger on it IMO feels alright and crisp, but nothing special. Mind you I haven't had any experience with a 10/22 or other .22lr rifles, so this is just my opinion. But if you're looking for a simple gun to shoot and to teach your grandkids basics, you cant go wrong with this, especially for the money.

iv had marlins and 10/22s. the 10/22 is the best and iv never had any problems with one. a marlin on the other had has some kind of plastic buffer that broke and jammed up the action i took it apart and got rid of the plastic and it worked fine

I just bought a Marlin 795 at Big 5 for $198 total (tax and droos fee included). I just found out that Marlin has $25 rebate for this rifle all year.

I don't know why you wouldn't want a new 10/22, other than people being scared about finish and plastic. Really, have there been any major problems? Guns exploding? Plastic snapping? Tiny gnomes crawling out of the crinkle finish and scratching out your eyeballs as your shooting? Aside from isolated internet complainers here and there, it's a bunch of doom and gloom created from nothing, but what do I know? Of course I'm biased...

But I will also tell you that out of the box, a Marlin model 60 beats a 10/22 every day of the week, and they're cheaper. If you check one out at your local store, make an inventory of the plastic parts there too...

If it were me, I'd get the Marlin as a no frills, cheap, accurate shooter.

man the marlin looks like a copy of the 10/22.... haha

maybe i should have gotten that if it is cheaper and more accurate and has bigger mag capacity. (although tube fed...)

Thanks everyone for the comments, even yours scootergmc. The only complaints I've read about is the barrels on the new 10/22 rifles are painted blue; it is not blued and the paint comes off. That and the plastic trigger assembly.

I will have to check out the Marlin 60 at one of the local stores.
