    New Marlin 795 Needs Scope

I need opinions and I've found that there is no shortage of them on this site!!

So, with that in mind, let me lay out the basics. I just bought a Marlin 795; in fact I haven't even taken possession of it yet. But I want to start thinking about a scope to get for it. The gun will be used for my entertainment and I plan to punch lots of holes in paper with it. I'll mainly shoot at 100 yards. I'm 54 and have the eyesight to go with my age (I wear glasses). I'd like to be able to see where my shots hit the target thru the scope, rather than buying a spotting scope. I'm also in a wheelchair, so going out to the target frequently isn't much of an option. I'm looking for a good mid-range (price-wise) scope, but want to keep in perspective that I'm shooting a $150 rifle. I'm not too familiar about scopes, but I'm reading as much as I can. So please, give me your opinions!!

    Thanks.

I have this 3-9x Bushnell rimfire scope on my 795. At full 9x magnification a 100 yard target is clear with excellent lighting in my opinion. You'll find this scope on more than a handful of our 795s around here. It can be had for less than $50 on a number of sites like midway or opticsplanet.

Also, if you haven't already, read through this thread on the for all sorts of good stuff on the 795.

Hope this helps and welcome to calguns!

http://www.cameralandny.com/demos-pentax.html Here are some pentex gameseekers. They are demos but they will look like new (not mounted) and the price is right. They have both 3x9x40 and 4x12x40 for $49. I have the 4x12x40 and a 1.75x5x24 gameseeker and they are good for the money. Mark

I was going to buy this scope for my Marlin 60 for $18.99 plus shipping, comes to about 25 bucks. Naturally, you do not want to spend $100 on a scope for a $150 gun, lol, at least I know I do not.

I have the same bushnell as mentioned above. I think it's like 40 on amazon and free shipping.

Use Shoot N See targets, the kind that make a color ring around the hole. They make it much easier to see the hit with your rifle scope vs using a spotting scope. Also you may want to start at 50 yards then 75 then 100 as you get proficient at each distance and learn your rifle. There is a lot more to this than simply attaching a scope and hitting the 100 yard bulls-eye especially with a .22 rifle.

For my 795, I went into walmart and bought a Bushnell 3-9x Sportsman for $55 and its clear enough for 100yard shooting all day. The rings I even purchased from them too, $6 for weaver matte rings.

                  Thanks for all the advice.

Compulsivegunbuyer - I know what you mean about good glass. I made the same mistake last year when I bought a 35mm digital SLR camera to take pictures of my son playing basketball. Turned out I didn't have a fast enough lens to take good action shots in the gym. Don't want to make the same mistake again.

Shooterdude - I just recently found Shoot-N-See targets. My daughter's boyfriend, a LEO, used them when we went shooting. Love at first sight!! Went right home after shooting and stocked up on them.

It looks like I'll need to decide between a 3x9 or a 4x12 scope. I need to get my hands on them and look through 'em. I've learned not to buy the absolute cheapest item, but to buy more in the mid-range. I am so excited to go out and start punching holes in some defenseless paper!!

Thanks, again, for all the advice. I knew I could count on Calgunners.
