I just have the regular factory mag release. But yeah, I've never used one before.
Are they just bigger and easier to handle?Comment

I've used the factory mag release on my 10/22's for close to 15 years. I've used extended ones as well, but have yet to see the point. Please read the Calguns Wiki
Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.

2008 was the beginning of the finish change.
I bought a couple CRR youth models during that year...the first one was gloss black / blued barrel, the second was crinkle paint black paint / matt barrel.
The extended releases allow you just to push forward on the release and the mag drops into your hand...no need to push the release up while trying to get the mag to drop down...so much easier!

If you adjust for inflation, 10/22s are much cheaper than they were originally. I think for what it is you are still getting a great deal. According to this webpage (http://29.noah.aboussafy.com/firearm...rice-over-time ) it is 35% cheaper than it was originally, and he is using a retail price of $269 (maybe for msrp its right?)!
Build a gun from scratch using after market parts (not necessarily match grade parts) and you will likely spend ~$600-$800. Thats about the cost of a MK77/22 and it all seems more reasonable. Atleast until you price a savage

BTW ... If you go back through the ~50 pages in the Rimfire sub-category on the forum, almost each page had a thread on the 10/22!
That has to mean something!
A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently and die gallantly. The plastic trigger and the new barrel mfg method came in early 2008.What was the last year the rifle was made where the bluing wasn't painted on and the trigger/trigger assembly (?) wasn't plastic. I intend to buy a used rifle and after reading info here about the way the new ones are made, I definitely don't want one with those features. Thanks.
I picked up one in Jan 2008 and managed to get the old stock.
The painted black & stainless steel receiver change came much earlier.
Before that, IIRC, there were two interior rails inside the receiver for the bolt vs. just one.
This guy likes the Polymer trigger group. His testing shows its much more durable.
