Ruger 10/22 Sight question

I am shooting about 5 inches high at around 40 feet with my rifle, and a couple of inches left (partly because of the wind and myself).

How should I adjust the rear sight? Up, down?

You always move the rear sight the way you want to move the bullet. So if the bullet is hitting high you need to lower the rear sight.

What is the recommended zeroing distance? And would one "click" on the rear sight suffice?

It almost makes me think the previous owner of this rifle shot at ~125 yards...

Do you have a scope mounted on your rifle or are you talking about the factory iron sights? Typically .22lr rifles are zero'd at 25-50 yards depending on the kind of shooting you're doing. Are you shooting your rifle free hand at 15 yards or using a rest? Try setting up a target at 25 yards and shoot a few 5 round groups using a rest and see where your groups are at.

Just the factory iron sights. I shot free hand at 15 yards, but a buddy shot at the same distance using a rest and it still came out high. I just do casual plinking.

Thanks! Try adjusting your rear sight a couple notches down like TMC suggested and shoot some groups.

It is obvious your rifle is defective. Please send it to me (I'll pay shipping) and I'll send it back as soon as I fix the problem. It may take some time to remedy tho, so it may be awhile before I return it.
