looking for some help with a new firearm.

I'm new to firearms (even though my dad used to take me shooting when I was a kid) and I'm thinking about taking my 9 and 10 year old sons shooting but I don't know what to start them out with-what would you all recommend for their first weapon to use? I just bought a SIG P228 and I know that there is no way they'd be able to handle it. Should I start out with a .22 rifle? Thanks for the input.

.22 rifle and .22 handgun. You gotta teach them the basics before you teach them about how to handle the bigger stuff. Make sure they're comfortable with firearms before you move them up to something that takes more control.

Most civilization is based on cowardice. It's so easy to civilize by teaching cowardice. You water down the standards which would lead to bravery. You restrain the will. You regulate the appetites. You fence in the horizons. You make a law for every movement. You deny the existence of chaos. You teach even the children to breathe slowly. You tame.

When it came to hand guns I started my son and daughter off with a airsoft pistol.. This was done to teach them correct safety and handling of the gun.. Then once I saw that they were capable They got to shoot the ruger singl six.
      The rifle was a 10/22

my first shooting experience/ gun was a single shot .22 bolt action rifle. you had to open the bolt, install the bullit , close the bolt pull back a knob on the back of the bolt , diengage saftey ,aim and the fire. it taught me how to shoot and not just go out and dump ammo. thats probbaly why i like shooting my .50 hawkens black powder so much . when you got to go through that prosses you make sure your aim is true before you fire.I still have the .22 . its to small for me to even shoot any more. but that is the gun my children will learn to shoot on. as in life some times you only get one shot and you best make it count. just make it fun, safe , and make sure they know there is no reset button once you pull the trigger . enjoy it , it is some thing your children will remember always.

I have started each of my kids out with a 22 Davy Ckricket. It's an inexpensive 22 single shot bolt gun that is just the right size for younger shooters.
