    Savage MKII FSS accuracy

    Hello guys,
I got a savage mk2 FSS a few weeks ago and finally got a chance to take it out today. Well I was shooting at 50 yds and was hoping to get atleast 1 MOA or .5" @ 50yd. Well the best I could get was about 1.5 MOA or .75" at 50yd. I only had American Eagle and CCI mini mag and did best with the mini mag.
Anyway, does anyone here have any experience with a Savage MKII of their own? Whats the best accuracy I should expect from this gun? and does anyone know what ammo I can try to get the best accuracy out of this gun?

Also I was using a 4x bushnell scope, maybe a higher powered scope will get better accuracy?
Is life so dear or peace so sweet as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery?

Hey there Pedro, I have one and only shoot Eley's in it. Have had some pretty good luck hitting 4" clays at over 90 yds. time and time again when there is no wind. Wind kicks up forget it those little bullets take off.

To get the most from the MKll it needs good ammo. Some will always shoot cheap bulk well but most all will shoot with good ammo. Mine likes RWS rifle target in the orange box. About 65.00 a brick from MidwayUSA. You can order just a box and try it. Any Eley is good try some of it as well.
The scope is ok, good quality, but you will do better going with more mag. Check Mueller. I use a Weaver T24 it is almost to much at 50 yards just right at 75 to 100. You can't hit the same spot if you can't see the exact same spot each shot. Also an adjustable objective is good.
The FSS has a stock height for the factory iron sights. If your head is not steady and comfortable you won't shoot to the best of the rifle. Try a add on cheek piece cheap and easy if you don't like it move on.
You didn't mention bags or rest you may have been using. To get the best you will spend a fair amount on the rest you are using.

Oh, yeah I was just using sandbags, no rest. Well thanks for the advice, I will try some of that ammo and see what the results are and probably a different scope in the future. Thanks.

Here is a pic of my MKII FSS. Had to take part of the rear sight off to mount the scope, and bipod was only for the picture.

See if you can get a dollar bill to slide down the barrel channel. If it sticks, you might consider getting a dowel and some sand paper and free floating the barrel so the stock doesn't touch the barrel.
Watch how you are shooting. Use a good rest, develop a method of shooting that allows you to grip the gun exactly the same each time and make sure it doesn't move when you fire. This takes practice. Experiment. Some guns like a tighter hold and some like to be just caressed.
Get as much different .22 ammo that you can and try different brands. The gun will like some more than others. Among the cheap ammo out there, Federal has the best street rep. That said, your gun will tell you what it likes.
Lastly, make sure your scope is securely mounted. Make sure you action screws are securely tightened and if there are two, see they are similarly tightened.
If nothing improves, look at the muzzle and make sure you have a nice clean crown with no burrs or irregularities at the rifling that would cause trouble. If it looks rough, have a gunsmith recrown and polish it.

My MKIIBV shoots very well with blazer bulk packs. In fact, even better than wolf match. 1moa at 50 yards with a 4-16x44 scope.

try Wolf.. very accurate.. I have the mark II BTVS and .5 group is not a prob at 50 yards.. I have been having problems with ejecting cartridges lately but it was an easy fix I finally found out.. If you have that same prob message me. Definetely try the Wolf Match Target though. http://www.midwayusa.com/browse/Brow...*&brandId=1679

Nice rifle Pete! Using the suggestions above you'll soon get better groups.

For my old eyes, I need a little higher magnification. That brought my groups in tighter.
