A good target .22lr questions, socal

hey folks so I am looking for a nice target shooting .22lr
probably around 50yards mainly but be nice to do away with 100yards as well.

so far from research, I have found that

    CZ 452 // Savage Arms

seem to be the most favorite amongst most people.

Also I am putting this into consideration, I am looking for availibility of course there are many that show up on the for sale, but in case it doesnt I would like to purchase a nice target .22lr at a store "assurance" of knowing I can always buy one if I cant find it used.

    any recommendations?

target wise better to go with semi auto? or bolt?

worse case scenerio I was planning on just getting a s&w mp15-22, although I dont know if you would consider that a good target .22lr.

any help would be great, thanks.

IF you want the best accuracy then go with a bolt action rifle. They will be more accurate than a semi. If you intend to do some plinking then go with the semi. I shoot a Marlin 925M (22 mag) that is 1" accurate at 100yds. Marlin also makes this rifle in 22lr, Model 925. Cost about $200+tax+DROS. With this rifle in 22lr don't expect the same accuracly at 100yds as the 22mag but a heck of a lot cheaper to shoot. Remember the gun is the cheapest part of shooting, ammo the most expensive part.

The Marlin 925s are plain jane rifles, not fancy. With a little trigger work (you can do yourself) they can be really accurate. rimfirecentral.com has a sticky on doing Marlin bolt action rifle trigger work. If you want a pretty and maybe a little more accurate rifle go with a Savage 22.

Kimber 82 from the CMP. Support them, and get the rifle delivered right to your front door.

Only problem is it is a little heavy.

What do you want to do with your rifle?
For example, if you have a competition in mind, then show up at a match and see what others are shooting; talk to them and they'll probably let you try their rifles. Just for fun, maybe you want a semi auto action or lever action.

You mentioned 50yards and 100 yards, but what accuracy do you want?
Better manufacturers supply a test target and guarranty rifle accuracy. The CZ452 will probably come w/ a 1" group target at ~50yds; a kimber/Anschutz .3", a cooper .25". (Example just based on my rifles' targets, but I have owned many.)

How much do you want to spend?
Important as the CZ is $300, Kimber is $1k, Anchutz is $1.5K

no competition in mind at all.

just something simply fun to shoot outdoor, and something that
is pretty accurate out of the box dont feel like spending a ton of money
to make a rifle more accurate rather have it pretty accurate out of the box.

yeah around 300-500$ was the range i was looking at ,
i would like to find a nice cz I just dont know where to look here in orange county.

worse case scenerio I can just go with a s&w mp15-22 just for fun, but
i doubt the accuracy is anywhere near on par as the cz and other "target"
          rifles.

The test target that comes with a CZ is not an indicator of its accuracy potential. That has been well documented on rimfirecentral. It's just an indicator of basic functionality. CZ would be smarter not to include them in the box. With the right ammo you should be able to get 0.5" groups at 50 yds with a CZ452. I've seen targets posted that are much better than that, but I don't know if those people can get that all the time.

I have plenty of fun - my kind of fun - with a bolt action. My fun is to see how well I can shoot (and get better at it), not how many rounds I can put downrange in the least amount of time. I find cycling the bolt a pleasant aspect of my shooting. That's probably why all eight rifles I own are bolt actions!

If you show up at my local silhouette match, you'll find people shooting everything from stock and modified 10/22s to CZs, Marlins, Remingtons and Anschutzs. But it is fairly low-key competition, so it's more of an indicator of the shooters' personal tastes rather than of what is most accurate.

Me? I use a CZ 452 Classic (pre-American) with a Timney trigger, and also have a CZ 452 American in .17HM2 with the low-cost tube trigger fix. My son has CZ 452 Trainer with the even lower-cost foil tape trigger fix. All fun shooters. Didn't do anything else, like bedding the action, to them. I found the American at Turner's. If they don't have one in stock, they sure should be able to order one for you.

Hello there fellow smallbore silhouette shooter. I used to do a lot of that, and it's a really fun way to understand the issues w/ the .22lr platform and become good w/ it.

I'm with you on the CZ test target, that it may be better for CZ not to include one. I do recall seeing some pics of how CZ test fires the rifles, but that's what some manufacturers do too, i.e. only w/ front rest. So, in a way, the CZ target is reflective of how CZ thinks their rifles can shoot which makes it comparable to the others. I was only able to get .6" out of my CZs w/ Eley target rifle w/ just front rest. (I should add that .6" was the best of my CZs)

OP, in your price range the CZ wuold be a good choice in terms of accuracy. My initial price of $300 might be a bit on the low end, so I should correct myself and say $350.

I bought 2 CZs from http://www.whittakerguns.com and have had good experience (fast shipping, responsive workers, new rifles--not something displayed, and low prices). I have no connection w/ them except being a customer ~5 yrs ago.

With your budget of $500, I'd suggest that you get a rifle w/ iron sights and put the extra money into ammo fund. Once you've shot a few bricks (1 brick = 500rnds), you'll become a good shooter and then you'll be in a better position to pick the scope that suits you (or even another rifle).

The poster above made a good suggestion on the trainer model, which has sights and cheaper than others due to cheaper wood (which in this case makes no difference to you).

CZ452 / CZ453 Varmint or the American will be good. If you get the CZ452 you can change out the trigger spring and get a 1.5 to 3 pound trigger pull with some over travel and the cost is for the spring from the hardare store. The 453 comes with adjustable trigger and you have to pay another $100 extra. Lastly, Don't over looks the CZ452 trainer, is a good shooter as well.

I have a Marlin model 70 with the tube magazine. I bought that gun in 2001 and it still shoots like the day I bought it. I replaced the wood stocks for an ATI Dragunov skelotonized and it is even better.

Try the galleryofguns website. There should be a shop near you that is in their distributor network. It's painless. Find the shop that has offers the lowest price, put down a small deposit, and the gun will go out that day or the next. You pay the balance at your FFL. There are a few CZ 452's in their system at the moment. I know because I just bought one.

Judoguy, just goes to the CZ-America web site and do a dealer search by inputting your ZiP Code and the way you goes buddy. Don't forget to hold on to your wallet.
