I have a local dealer that has a used 10/22 for $219. It is serial # 122-794XX It looks to be a sportster model as its all wood. 2 questions, is this a good price and is that serial number a good series. I can get a brand new Marlin 795 at B5 right now for $159 and a $25 rebate. I know the Ruger is probably better quality. But a cheap Marlin and less than $100 in mods. or a $200 used 10/22 and still some money in mods. looking for opinions.....Thanks

Isn't that almost what new ones go for? Does it have a plastic trigger guard, or steel?sigpic

This is an older one, probably late 1960s or early 1970s production.
It's all metal construction, and also it is of the final standardized production pattern...the first couple years of production (1964-66) had some changes and are not all the same.
These are nicely made...real blueing and quality fitting.
$219 sounds good to me...same as a new one, yes, but a nicer gun, even if used with some finish damage.

you're the only one who can decide if it's worth it to you. personally, i would buy a new one, or go with the Marlin. Marlin's are very well made and are great .22's. Everyone says the 10/22 is the top of the line, and it most likely is, but if you're looking at completely stock models (not ones that have been upgraded and fine tuned by someone) then there are a few others that are a close second. I'd consider Marlin to be one of them.sigpic
Most civilization is based on cowardice. It's so easy to civilize by teaching cowardice. You water down the standards which would lead to bravery. You restrain the will. You regulate the appetites. You fence in the horizons. You make a law for every movement. You deny the existence of chaos. You teach even the children to breathe slowly. You tame.

That's an early 80's gun and there's nothing special about it. I wouldn't pay over $150 for it, but that's just me and I see and pass up a lot of used 10/22s. Of course, I have bought a *few* but this isn't one I would look twice at.
Go buy the Marlin.Comment

I just called the Big 5 on Grass Valley Highway in Auburn. They sell basic black with wood stock 10/22's for $269. That's the same price as the Big 5's in San Diego so I assume that they also put them on sale about every other week, so you should be able to get one for less than $269.Chris

IMO, Fair price when you buying this 10/22 from a local gun shop. Don't forget that the shop owner need to pay the employee, utilities bills and rent. If you buy the 10/22 from a private party then is on the high side. Look you are support your local community and small business.
