Looking for a good training .22

So after returning home from the range yesterday, both my wife and I agreed that we need some serious help learning to shoot consistently. There's an Appleseed event coming up, and I'm thinking about getting a .22 for myself. She has a fabulous Marlin 39a already, but at this stage in our lives I don't think I can justify buying another one.

I want a rifle that's got great iron sights that's not a semi-auto. My battle rifle is a bolt gun, so I'd like to learn to be a rifleman with one. Both the CZ-452 and Marlin 925 spring to mind immediately. Have any of you used them in competition or at an Appleseed event?

Savage Mark 2 with accu-trigger. I have the Williams firesights (fiberoptic) on mine and I love it.
Using C Products 10 round magazines in my AR-15...just to be "safe"...

Well, you certainly want something with a good trigger for target work and Savage's Accutrigger is one of the best out of the box rimfire triggers I've ever tried. I've seen not so good shooters do very well with the new Savage rimfires. I don't think there's a more accurate new .22 in its price range. Personally, I wouldn't consider anything else if I were in the market for a new budget .22 bolt gun.

Also, unless you've got really good eyes, a peep is the way to go for any rifle without optics IMO. Even when my eyes were still working good I could never do near as well with an open rear sight as I could with a peep. You might check one of these out...

Or one of these if you don't mind the rear sight (it's kinda cheesy, but could be replaced) and wanted to spend less...

The above said, if you could spring for a CZ 452 Trainer model and didn't mind doing a little fiddling with the trigger and a couple of other minor details, you'd end up with a higher quality rifle that will be just as accurate. My 452 American is a sub MOA rifle.

The CZ's have a very nicely made open rear sight if that's what you're wanting...

+1 for the CZ 452 Trainer. I really like it's iron sights.

I have a Marlin 795 that is my Liberty Training Rifle. Put tech sights on it, a GI type sling and some paint. I made Rifleman with it at the Dulzura Appleseed Yesterday Love my Marlin.

Ordered the CZ. I promise pics and a full range report when it's out of jail!

                Good choice.

While you're waiting for it, you might get yourself a Yodave trigger kit ($15 on ebay) and some Wolf Match Target. It shoots great out of most CZ's. I just bought me another brick for $43.

If you wanted to go totally nuts, you could buy a Timney trigger for ~$100, but it does require some wood removal to make it fit...

Did you order the CZ452 Training Rifle? That is a good rifle for off hand shooting with the iron sight.
FYI. Whenever you get ready for scope, make sure that you use a high mount if you use any high power scope. I have a hard time with it because of the rear sight.

+1 For the CZ 452... mine was my first firearm. I've shot it out to 300 yards and when there's no wind it's useful on can sized targets. I bedded mine and adjusted the trigger so I can't say it's stock. Mine likes Federal bulk packs but shoots Dynamit Nobel sub moa.

You can find some great deals on used rifles if you look around a bit. I was able to find a Mossberg 44US (a few years before CMP started selling them) for $125. I paid $75 for my Mossberg 42A some years back and I picked up a Rem 513J for $67 about 5 years ago! All three of these rifles can shoot as well as my Anshultz!
