    .17M2 dedicated AR15

    CalGun Friends,

I'm in the military so I float from state to state, country to country, every 2-3 years or so. Currently still in Iraq, but considering on building some CA-legal uppers for my AR15s still in storage. Looks like my next move will be to CA, I have mixed feelings, but it should provide me some stability and increase my windows between deployments.... it would be nice to raise a family....

So on to my question that hopefully you can help me with; before this deployment 22LR AR15s were legal in CA. I could build one exactly like the M4 I'm carrying now, except in 22LR -none of that fixed magazine, featureless rifle crap. Can I still build a "feature-full" CA-legal AR15 (M4) but chambered for a .17M2?

After researching the aspects and advantages of the .17M2, it makes more sense to use than a 22LR based on the applications I intend to use it for -varmint hunting.

Thanks for your input. I could run a search, but darn connection is too slow where I'm currently at. Back to work.

The laws limiting features apply to center-fire rifles only. For rimfire you are good to play. Now to find a barrel for that....
Using C Products 10 round magazines in my AR-15...just to be "safe"...

you are good to go with the rimfire. You shouldnt have any trouble getting the barrel but it will have to be custom chambered.

Go check out the HM2 forumn on rimfire central.

I've heard personally from Bill (Alexander Arms) that he's working on a 17HMR upper for AR15.

I think HM2 is also another good one. I shoot HM2 with a CZ and I think I'd line up for an AR15 upper in HM2 if there's one available. I love how straight the HM2 shoot without the price tag of HMR.

Please keep us posted on your progress.

There have been some advisory warnings in the past few months about using .17HMR in semi -auto. Not sure about the .17Mach2. Don't recall what the reasoning was, possibly the extreme shoulder causing hang ups or something. Still, wouldn't either of those be sweet for little fur bearers?

              Thanks for the replies.

Yep, saw that site. Good stuff. Now, does anyone have one? If so, please provide some feedback. Curious on which ammo it prefers or will it eat anything? I know most 22LR uppers are finicky. Starting at $645 for a basic kit, you'd hope it shoots everything you feed it....

Both 17HMR & 17HM2 are NOT advisable to shoot in a semi-auto. The high pressures created by the bottle-neck cartridge lead to over-pressure situations that cannot be adequately handled in a semi-auto design. The result is frequent case-head separations.

Now that isn't good news, but have you seen the size of (the bolt and) breech on those barrels? Appear pretty substantial. If anything, the high pressure would be compensated by the provided recoil spring. I'd like to think Ballistic Advantage LLC found the right spring combination, rifling, and twist ratio that works with most ammo manufacturers.

Makes you wonder how Sig or Glock ever got the .357 SIG cartridge to work in a semi-auto pistol. Aren't 5.56x45 cartridges considered bottle-neck and last I checked my M4 fired consistently in semi-auto and burst? Apples and oranges I suppose.

If it doesn't work, I can always fall back to Spike or TacSol .22LR I guess. But I'd like to become a believer first. For the price, the .17HM2 is one bad ***** round.

I like it, but the price tag is a turn-off. It cost more than my Spike's upper, and even more than a 6.5 Grendel.

I have to pass for now.... back to my Spike's 22lr

I have heard about the 17HMR but not about the 17MachII. Could you provide proof that the 17MachII has this problem.... I have not heard or seen any recall like the one that was issued for the 17HMR. I have put a lot of 17MachII rounds through my 10/22 conversion and not one problem.

I dont know about the HMR but for the HM2 this is NOT true. Semis have been eating this stuff up for several years without issue. Most of the early tuning issues for the first conversions were worked out years ago. HM2 is good to go in Semi or bolt actions.

Yah... that's what I thought. I had never heard anything ever about the 17machII and just figured that it was more rookie PooPoo being spread around...

Ha! That's pretty arrogant of you to tell someone you know nothing about that they are a liar. I have experienced it myself - multiple times. You are welcome to come inspect the many exploded cases of Hornady and CCI 17HM2 that I kept as proof.

You can also do some research on the internet to find that it has been widely reported. I'll help get you started: http://www.google.com/search?rlz=1C1...ead+separation

In the future I suggest you attempt at least a simple google search before you go spouting off like a complete bozo.
