Looking for a 22 pistol, opinions?

Hello All-

I searched the forum for a similar thread but didn't find what I'm looking for. I want a 22lr pistol for the range/plinking, but wanted to get some opinions. I am considering a buckmark or markI to III. I would consider upgrading the gun in the future, so which ever one is more/easier to customize. Any info would be great, I know both guns are great, but the buckmark is hard to find and the new ruger has lame safety add ons. I am open to used and i have shot a Mark II and like it. Thanks!

Buckmark is a better pistol in quality and fit, harder to do a trigger job and less accessories (lot of that is bling for both makes). Ruger Mk I-III are the small block chevy in 22rf pistols. I have both, the buckmark is more stock but understand I tinker more with Rugers.

I have three Rugers, a 4" MKI all original, a 6&7/8" MKIII SS slabside, and a 5.5" SS bull barrel MKIII. Both MKIII's have the full Volquartsen treatment.
Yes, they're a pain to do a full strip on, but it's not needed too often. I have no Buckmark experience.

I am very new to shooting and so far, I have spent my money and went through a

Ruger Vaquero .357, sold that, bought a gsg5 .22 rifle, and a walther p22 pistol.

and most recently the new mark 3 from ruger, hands down I had the most fun with my mark 3 its way more accurate than me so I have a lot more fun with it and especially when I take friends who shoot for the first time they like the feeling of hitting the targets accurately =]

Have MKII sold my buckmark.

Ruger is SO much better. VQ sear and it's sweet.

Ruger Mark III is a great .22 plinker. I have the 22/45 model and love it.

I have a MKIII target with a bull barrel and a Troglo red dot sight. Yes it can be a pain to do a full break down but you don,t have to do it that often. Every time I go shooting I take this fun little plinker I really enjoy useing this gun . Sorry I,ve never fired a Buckmark so I can,t give you a opinion on it. Good luck with your choice, Redhemi

Actually, you can. And on top of that, there are Mark2s with the 10" barrel from the factory.

I went to see them today, the MK III is the 22/45 bull barrel, and the buckmark is the camper. I like the feel of the buck in my hand, but i like the ruger easiness. I like the weight of both, but the 22/45 feels "small", not a secure grip. Can I get a better grip for this? I want to scope it and the guy said that you can't on the buck, is this ture? If I can scope the buckmark without too much trouble, i think I would go in that direction, any help is appeciated!

If you want to scope the buckmark, you can buy a tacsol rail. Or splurge and get a buckmark contour like I did.

See the picture in my post above. Its very easy to do. You replace the top strap (2 screws) that has the rear sight with a railed one. Mine cost me $25 from Brownells.

You can't buy a Tactical Solutions barrel for a Ruger in CA, its not on the "not un-safe" list.

You would have to buy it from the factory or spend some cash to have a smith modify it unless you have a barrel vice with fitted jaws and know what you are doing. I'm not saying it can't be done, but it's a whole lot easier with a buckmark, 1 screw holds the barrel on. It takes less than 5 min to swap a buckmark barrel.
