    10/22 Feeding issues

Was at P2K earlier today breaking in a new 10/22. Couldn't get through (1) 10 round string without it jamming. When i peered into the chamber, i could see 1 round floating loosely, tilt the chamber, out came the round (no strike was made on the round). Even had 1 stovepipe. I'm thinking this is a rotary mag issue? When I had 10 rounds in the mag and I shook it, I could here the rounds shaking some. Is this supposed to be or are they supposed to be tight?

Anywho, brand new 10/22, brand new mag. Any help would be appreciated.

The Ammo I was using is

Federal Champion 36G CPHP (Value pack 525 count)
Before the range trip, I broke it down, cleaned and oiled with Tetra..

On a side note- Range was packed today. Nice to see lots of shooters, even if I did have to wait 20 minutes for a lane.

My 10/22 is about 15 yeas old and it has never shot Federal Bulk pack HPs very good even though I have lots of the stuff. It jams like crazy in it. It shoots the Remington 22 bulk HPs and Win Xpert pretty good but shoots any lead round nose or Mini Mags perfectly.

Never really had problems with federal bulk pack.... Maybe try another brand ammo first like CCI Minimags, etc. An easy and cheap upgrade would be to change the shell extractor with a Volquartsen. I change them out on all my 10/22's and helps especialy when using bulk ammo. You could also be having a mag issue, maybe try using another one off a friend or if you have another mag yourself. Let us know what you find!!

Think that extractor is causing the feed problems?

Mine only dislikes any lead only bullets or the Bulk Remington Stuff. The plated Winchester and Federal stuff runs well. My son shot 400+ of the Federal bulk stuff last weekend without a hiccup.

Are you using Ruger mag? Butler Creek? Ramline or Eagle mag?

The Rugers and Bulter Creeks seems to work flawlessly in most people's 10/22.

Rugermag. Should the rounds sound loose when a full 10 rounds are inserted? I should have tried different ammo.

That sounds like your problem no pun intended. Here's how to take your mag apart and clean and retension it. You also could try a new mag. http://www.heypete.com/pete/shooting/rugermag.html
