    storing my 22

hey this is probably a dumb question, but im new to firearms. can i store my marlin 795 with the bolt left open? or would it wear on the recoil spring?

i keep my 795 with the bolt open. it shouldn't be a problem, spring fatigue comes from compressing and releasing the spring excessively. same concept goes for keeping magazines loaded. springs will fatigue over time but keeping them compressed won't reduce lifespan.

on the mag spring comment, I have had my glock mags loaded with home def rounds since 1987 and never changed a mag. I do rotate ammo every year and take the pistol out for use probably 10 times a year, but I have the same mags

always leave mags loaded for HD. compressing the springs doesnt wear them out. compressing them over and over (from use) does.

You should be fine leaving the bolt open on that 795. I personally don't leave my 10/22's open because i dont see the need.

Yea, on the mags, its fine leaving them loaded, I once left a 15rd mag for my Beretta loaded for almost 2 years, took it to the range and dumped the whole mag, no jams.

I close the bolt slowly while holding the trigger. I have stored rifles like this for over 30 years and don't see any negative effects.

i am storing it with the bolt open because i have a shotlock on it right now, that goes through the ejection port.
