S&W MP15-22 vs. Sig 522... help me pick!

There is way more plastic on the S&W. then you find on the Sig. I have handled both and the Sig feels most like a gun out of the two. Sig is also easy to field strip and clean. Plus it has a folding stock and heavy barrel.
If I were you I would wait a few months and see if Sig actually starts shipping the 522 with the BUIs like they are telling people at SHOT show.sigpicin the hands of

Got the S&W, good fun and you can add lot's of custom stuff to it. I have run a couple of hundred of rounds through it without a FTF or any other issues. The only challenge so far is trying to get extra mag's for it.Last edited by intensefab; 05-05-2013, 9:29 AM.California, love it or leave it....well after fifty years, sure am glad I left!Comment

Handled both, own the SIG,still haven't shot it. The SIG feels better to me(more metal for sure),
looks better then the S&W without a FH. S&W has had problems with
blown extractors---they WILL fix them of course but if it happens to
you and you have to send it back----well
. Check the S&W forum under
"Long Guns"--there is a lot of info, you decide. You do have to BUY sights for the
SIG making it more expensive--however you get what you pay for!The SIG
folding stock is much more sturdy/rigid and compact then the "tube" type collapsibles.
My SIG has a smooth/light/consistent 3 lb trigger pull! Pete

you should be able to buy a black sig 522 for 449$ or green for $469 & consider their overall build to be better than s&w. i don't care for the s&w cheap plastic top rail which really reduces the weapons' weight
buis can be acquired for as little as 50$ or over 200$ it's up to you
can you get somewhere that has both in stock so you can hold them
that would probably answer your question

yeah I was able to do that on thursday. there were things I did and didn't like about both. I agree the the S&W does feel a little more fake due to not having much metal and it felt front heavy to me and not very well balanced. But for some reason the pistol grip on the Sig seemed small to me and I felt like my pinky finger wanted to slip off and I'm not sure have I feel about the stock. but I can easily over look these problems based on the performance of gun
.. so that's why I'm trying to get some advice. And optics are not a real problem because I'm gonna put a 1x4 scope on top of it
... seems that the popular opinion is to go with the Sig so far!

Go with the Sig, buy a hogue rubber grip and put it on the pistol grip, that's what I did.

Can you get a Sig with the Rails and FH like the one here in the photo? Is so
what is the total cost?

The FH yes---the rail no--that is extra--the rail(part) is $350.Mine has a USED rail off a SWAT 556 which I paid under $200 for.The rail is some type of METAL not PLASTIC like the S&W--again you get what you pay for! SIG will make the
SWAT 522 with the rail at some point but will cost more then the
standard version, one sold here(SWAT rifle with rail) at RIFLEGEAR for $739.

I have both. Both are great rifles.
The smith is a tad lighter, great for girls or plinking at an indoor stand up range.
Its also a tad cheaper and comes with iron sights, right out of the box you are plinking.
Yes its all plastic but its plastic where it's needed. The idea is not to make a battlefield mil spec rifle, but rather a light AR trainer rifle for police depts and civilians that is as close to the original as possible. And it does that VERY well.
The bad on the smith is that the trigger is gritty and the mag is only made by smith. Hard to find right now, who knows about later.
My smith is also more accurate than my Sig.
My Sig is metal framed and a tad heavier. The Sig trigger is smooth like a target stage trigger. The Sig uses blackdog mags which are affordable and easy to find in bulk. (buy the blackdog mag loader!)
The Sig also uses plastic but only on its lower, stock and handguard.
The Sig also has a threaded flash hider for future options.
But the lack of Sig iron sights means this rifle cannot be shot right out of the box.
A front sight thread I did is here (http://www.calguns.net/calgunforum/s...=1#post3582864) So add on another $100-200 for some sort of sights or red dot scope.
Both rifles used cheap red box Federal just fine and only had 1 or 2 misfeeds in 500rds. Both are fun to shoot and easily usable by a beginner for training.
In my opinion, I liked shooting the Sig more and intend to shoot it more than the Smith. I will keep the Smith for friends and pure AR training. But in the end, the Sig cost about $200 more to set up. My next .22 will be the Tavor when it comes. It's fun to collect rifles you can actually afford to shoot.
If money is not an issue, I'd get the Sig.

good info guys! I know JK Supply has a S&W in stock but I gotta find out about them getting me a Sig. and again I'm planning on running my 1x4 scope on either one I get so I'm not as concerned about the irons but still good to know! I do like that the S&W can be set up to pretty much replicate my AR but I don't like how hard it is to get mags for it right now. That's once nice VERY appealing thing about the Sig is the ease of acquiring more mags at a decent price!Comment
