    17hmr failures in semi auto

Does anyone know exactly why it is not safe to use 17 hmr in semi autos? The public posts from Remington just state that it is unsafe to shoot.

I was curious as to why? Were the 17 hmrs detonating on feeding the second rounds? Or were the blowback actions of the semiautos innappropriate for the 17hrm so the cases were rupturing? Or was it something totally different?

Lots of info on this on the rimfirecentral.com site. I believe the 17hmr was basically rupturing cases out of battery, I think they basically were having the bolt blow open too fast before pressures were safe. I'm sure someone here can correct me/clarify this situation a little more. I was reading about them because I really wanted a semi-auto 17hmr but decided against it after seeing all the potential headaches it could cause (no pun inteded) I think the 17 hmr needs a locking style action instead of just a blowback action to be a little safer. I know some guys are having some success with their semi 17's, but they are a little beyond what I wanted to deal with.

I had a Magnum Research in 17hmr. almost all of the 50 rounds I shot that day had a bulge at the back of the casing except for the one that ruptured at edge of the rim and blew the magazine out of the rifle. It startled me a little.
