Disappointed

Anyone have advice on how to improve accuracy on a 10/22? Got it for christmas and installed a Bushnell Banner 3x9. Sighting it in for 100yds thinking of going down to 75yds and possibly changing the trigger.

I was horrified at the accuracy from my 10/22 in stock form. The best It could do from a rest and a 4x scope was a baseball sized group. I even tried a 16x Bushnell scope and I could see the rounds swirling on it's way to the target. It is possible the crown was messed up but I have long since got rid of the barrel. That BTW was with Agula match ammo. I installed a Houge stock and a blue Green Mountain barrel that shrunk my groups down to 3/4".

Typical rimfire ranges are 50', I would start there. A good rifle and shooter can light a match at 50'. My 10/22 has a .920 stainless barrel, Upgraded trigger, leupold 4-12 centerfire scope, solid drilled and tapped scope mounts. It shoots one hole groups consistently at 50-100 feet. I don't like grooved scope mounts (or Weaver style either)

Timney makes an excellent drop-in modular trigger for the 10/22 with pull weights available down to 1.5 #. Very easy install,about .5 hr. I would also recommend an excellent scope, such as the Leupold VX 11 3-9x33 AO,with extended focus range from 10 yds to infinity. This is an amazingly sharp & clear glass that will allow you to really see what you are doing. Also try as wide a variety of ammunition as you can, and you will probably find one that it shoots well. It may not even be the most expensive. Like AR's ,the 10/22 can really be a sickness and $1500. or more comes up real fast once you start changing to a match barrel,stock,etc! I think the above should make your rifle shoot more to your liking.

I would guess the ammo you are using would make a huge difference. I don't shoot any bulk ammo in my 10/22's. I do like the SK or Wolf ammo at around $4.50 a box/50. Mini-mags are OK for plinking but the groups open up too much for target shooting.

get a volquartsen hammer and a green mountain barrel. about $120 for both and you will bust clays at 100 yards as fast as you can put the crosshairs on them.

if you want to save money just sand down the barrel channel on the factory stock.
you can go crazy on a 10-22 but those 2 will get most people real happy with their ruger.

i would never really consider shooting at 100yd with a stock 10/22.

and if i did, i wouldnt expect groups better than 1 ft. You were also using a 3x9 scope for 100yd shots which is not ideal.

Spend some time on rimfirecentral.com to get an idea on what it takes to create a truly accurate 10/22. You will see some real pieces of art over there that will amaze you with accuracy.

The cheapest upgrade will be CCI minimags... Try a tactical solutions barrel..

New 10/22's must not be as good as the old ones. Mine's 16 or 17 years old, has a $39 Simmons 3x9 scope mounted on a $7 weaver rail and I can hit shards of broken clays at 100 yds with cheap ammo all day. Still planning on building a tricked out 10/22 one of these days though.

I just shot our Bi-monthly falling plate match with my 10/22. 6" steel plates at 75,125,175 yards. Off a bipod or rest, prone or bench. We can get groups of 1" at 175 yards!! But that's with Match ammo (Wolf, Eley, etc). And under ideal conditions. Otherwise 1-2" groups unless crosswinds are blowing!

All of the rifles used have upgraded triggers, barrels, etc. Ammo is very critical to group size. I started with Federal Gold Medal match until production standards changed. Then when to Winchester Power points, then Wolf.

Cheap ammo is for plinking NOT target shooting...

If you are looking to shoot groups for accuracy then you should build one or buy one already built with proof of groups. It just doesn't stop with a trigger, then a stock then a barrel then a receiver and on and on and on.
