Scope: 3-9x or 4x for plinking?

So, I'm getting back into my 10/22 just for fun. My Ruger is stock - from 1981! I think I'll get a Hogue stock and a TS barrel for it at the next Reno Gun Show....there is a booth up there were they have a nice package deal. I would like a nice lightweight scope for it too. (Lightweight being key)

So, is 4x "enough" for these rifles? Or is 3-9x really the way to go?

A cheaper Bushnell or BSA? Or get a Nikon Prostaff? I'll probably get the scope from Amazon.

3-9 are common. as far as scopes, you get what you pay for... i have BSAs, Barskas, Nikon, Tasco, Weavers.... I have a Barska on my 10/22 and it works fine.

i got a leapers (from UTG, and forgot the magnification range...) and it works fine up to ~160 yards (far as i shot with it). i was hitting a large sized fire alarm bell at the last socal calguns meet/tactical advantage shoot as long as i did my part holding it steady.

I would go with the 3-9 variable power. I think it is more versatile and has a wider range of use.

I have both, I use both, I like both. I will say that for the same price you generally get superior optics from a fixed power scope than a variable, if that's a concern of yours.

Please don't take this wrong but what other scopes have you used or looked through? If you have never used, looked through say a Nikon, Trijicon, Leupold, you may change your mind.... This is not to say that you scope is not the perfect scope for you and I am glad that you are happy with it. BUT I don't think that Leapers for $69.00 will ever compare to on of the above scopes...

I have several 10/22s and a variety of scopes. General plinking, I like the fixed 4X. Simmon's .22Mag scope line is pretty good and they have 4X and a couple different 3-9's with and without Adjustable Objective that are pretty inexpensive. The AO 3-9 is really nice for the range. Of course you can only move up from there. I shoot Mueller's APV on a couple bull barrel 10/22's and they are my favorite! I don't think you can go wrong with any of the already mentioned scopes for your 10/22 though.

me and a friend have a 4x32 simmons scope that works well. but i stepped up to a r-14x32 simmons. wooo...but the extra power helps with longer shots.

I've always picked up a 3-9x scope for my 10/22's. If I were to put anything else on them it would be an eotech.... that's why I stick with the 3-9x scopes. Less expensive and still a ton of fun. Plus with it at 3x you can get fairly close to objects without everything getting blurry.

Pick up a truglo or a weaver and you'll be happy. I like a really high magnification so I can spot my own shots and I just like high magnification on my smallbore stuff in general. My own theory is the higher the caliber, typically the lower power the scope. Something for a cape buffalo needs a 2-7 or a 1-4, but my .223's I TYPICALLY like at least a 4-12 up to a 6-24x44 or something of that nature. Anyway, choose your own but the higher the better for me! Here's a couple:

Actually I have owned Burris and Millett, and looked through many others, including a Leopold. But when it comes right down to it, my all time favorite is:

On my newest build I am using a 4x Nikon Prostaff. 4x for me is great out to 100 yards.

I have both a Leupold VX11 3-9x33 EFR rimfire and an Aimpoint 9000SC 2x with a 2 minute dot that I use on mine,with quick detach mounts. Out to 50 yards,I am really in love with the Aimpoint and it's razor sharp tiny dot, and find 2x is plenty. At 25 yards it looks like you can reach out and touch the target,but you can see quite clearly at 50.
