Scope and bench mount Ruger MkIII for sighting?

    Greetings:

I have been getting familiar with my new MkIII by shooting a set of 4 targets bench rested, then 2-4 more standing and holding free 2-handed. Oddly, I don't get dramatically better groups bench rested vs. free held, about 3-4 inches at 25 yds. bench-rested and 5-6 in. free hand.

I'm certain the pistol can do better than 3" at 25 yds., but with open sights the front sight dot covers the whole 4 in. target circle, so I really have no way to aim any more precisely than this with the open sights.

So I am interested in putting on an optic and perhaps employing a bench mount.

I don't want to spend a ton of $$$ on an optic specifically for the pistol, if the only purpose is to sight it and test its grouping potential.

Should I get a pistol-specific scope or should I try to find a scope that can work with all my guns? That would include a 10/22 and an M4 carbine.

    Hot scope tips welcome!

    Thanks for input.

hey man, I am about to pick up a mark 3 myself.

Been reading around and found most if not all people rock red dots.
Nothing crazy, I've read couple reviews with the mark 3 hunter, people
using 30$ dollar red dots and getting a much better grouping just because
some people dont really like the sights.

I will be throwing on my 50$ knock off red dot on mine once I get it.

But yeah sorry I wasnt sure if you wanted a "scope" or just different options instead of using the open sights.

Scopes for handguns are specific with a long eye relief something around 13 to 18 inches. Rifle scopes will run around 3 to 4.5 inches eye relief. So, no the scope will only work on handguns.
Cheap red dots and poor eyes don't do well together. The dot is large and poor eye sight makes it larger and fuzzy.
Get a cheap handgun scope and try it out. I have a NcStar on a S&W 22A and it is a good shooter off bags. Get a cheap plastic handgun rest it will be fine.

You don't say where you're located. If you're close to me, I'd let you use one of my red dots to try. BTW, I'd get a good quality red dot, it can be used on either rifle or pistol, no eye relief problems.

Thanks for pointing out the difference in eye relief distance.

Maybe the young Bucks out here do well with the Red Dot. My eyes need a little help. I just put the Simmons Pro Hunter 2X-6X on my 22/45 MKIII 678 and I can see what I'm shooting at.

Ok, I'm sold. I wanted to get a sight eventually, but it seems like I need one for diagnostic purposes even if my intention is to be an open sight shooter.

So the question now is what is the best one that isn't too big for the pistol, yet still suitable for the AR. I'd like to get a 2 MOA, I think. That should be covering only 0.5 in. of the 25 yd. pistol sight, and 2 in. of a 100 yd. rifle target, which is about near the ultimate statistical capability of these guns.

I guess it's time to start reading innumerable sight posts.

I'm Ok with spending for the good stuff. Should I consider EOtech and Aimpoint to be the top two? Is there a 3rd I should consider?

Cool. This is a fun gun. It's also very impressive looking (at least my Hunter is).

I think I'm still working this out. It seems red dot sights for pistols are no better than 4 MOA, which I think is about twice as big as the gun is capable of grouping. Thus, a better sight is needed to bench test the gun's ultimate accuracy potential.

It seems a scope is the correct solution for this. But a scope might not be the preferred solution for actual shooting once the potential has been determined. For that a dot might be better.

I'll probably just buy one of each.

eotech with ruger mark lll 22/45 hunter

I have an eotech 512 with a ruger 22/45 hunter that will shoot less than 1/2 inch most of the time (25 yards with cheaper eley ),but i always have that one bullet (out of ten) that loves to fly somewhere. looked at a bunch of cheaper scopes, but love the eotech with the 1moa dot in the middle. Also installed a vq sear on the hunter .WOW IS ALL I CAN SAY ABOUT THE SEAR!!,
