    Range Report: Sig 522

    So...
I went to the Bay area Gun Vault in Sunnyvale back in MARCH and asked about the sig 522. "they should be available in august" so I put a few hundred down and added my name to the list.
They FINALLY called me on the 14th (not to say anything bad about the guys at BAGV, it takes a while for any new gun to hit the shelves) and I was sadly unable to fill out the paperwork on the 14th to get it before xmas.
I picked it up on Sat the 26th and welcomed it to its new home and cleaned it and read the manual and all that funny stuff.
Took it out today and all I can say is..... WOW.
Sadly this .22 does NOT come with ANY sights whatsoever. And it is designed to take the hooded front sight and rotary diopter sight available for the 556 but at $250 (half the price of the 522) I think I will pass. the front sight rail is not a picitany rail so it will not accept a front sight you might expect to put on your AR, so I opted for using my Zeiss Z-point red-dot.
I started at 25 yards and got the sight zeroed in and at 25 yard it was a TACK DRIVER. Some guy next to me was plinking with a GSG-5 and his groups at 25 yards were about 2-3 inches. My groups at 25 yards were about 1 inch.
I went out to 50 yards and my groups were still about 2-3 inches. Not bad for a .22 with a 16 inch barrel which has not been broken in.
I had only ONE failure to eject and after that NO problems after 200 rounds fired.
It is light, ergonomic, and its pretty fun to shoot.
For all you people looking to get those .22 AR's from S&W... save your money and put your name on a list for the 522.
I was using MiniMags and some other high velocity Federal ammo.
The black dog mags fed with no problem and overall it was a very positive shooting experience.
I recomend the 522, but be advised it comes with NO sights and it lookes like ONLY the "sig hooded front sight" will work on it, and I cannot seem to find just the front sight (was hoping to use a magpul BUIS or something else other than the $200 sig rear sight).
I was thinking of getting one of those chicom made ACOG clones off ebay for it, but maybe I will get some cheaper nikon scope for it. Gonna ponder with the idea of scopes for a while before I commit to it.

Hope this helps anyone who might be thinking of getting one.
    Cheers.

Sounds like a nice gun. I looked them over also and liked them. For such a sweet shooting gun, you might consider bypassing the really cheap optics and putting something decent on top of it to aim with. Hope you enjoy the heck out of it in 2010!

Just slap a vortex strikefire on it. That should be plenty at 130-150 shipped.

MI makes a front sight for this rifle that runs around $85. It is compatible with AR rear BUIs so if you have one lying around you can get out the door with irons for under $100. If you dont have a rear BUI there are a ton of options you could go with. I plan on putting a rear MBUS sight on the rifle.

Thanks for the information. I have been mentally going from one AR style .22 to another and finally decided the SIG sounded best. You have provided support to that decision...now the anticipation and wait, ha, ha.

Just picked my 522 up from Turners yesterday for $499. They have a bunch in stock. Cant comment on it yet as I haven't been able to take it to the range but what I can tell you is this LR look really good! I will give my range report after the long weekend. Anyone know where I can get rails for this?

Do you have extra 10-rd mags? If so, where did you get them and for how much? I'm considering picking up the 522 but I haven't seen any place that sells extra mags for it.
