.22lr Plinking Rounds - Lead Nose or Copped Plated

I always have plinked with .22lr bulk pack 40 grain, lead nose rounds.

However, a friend recently remarked that I should never shoot lead nose rounds, but should only use copper plated rounds. He said that the lead rounds foul the gun, and that the copper plated rounds are not much more expensive. My experience has been just the opposite. I have never had a fouling problem, and always found the copper plated rounds to be more expensive.

I'm pretty sure that Calgunners have an opinion on this. Anyone care to comment?

I too shoot with 40 gr round nose lead and have always been under the impression that in the long run, round nose lead was easier on the bore (less abrasive) than the copper plated stuff. Also, all of the most expensive competition .22lr like Eley Tenex is lubricated round nose lead and I figure that if it works for olympic class shooters then it should be fine for my humble little Buckmark

i notice it's easier to clean after using the copper stuff, but again, my 10/22 shoots whatever cheap stuff I shove down her!

The reason I have a 10/22 is so I can shoot whatever comes in the various cheap 22 bricks!!!

they should work, although depending on how weak the powder is... it may not cycle.

gonna wear your barrel and crown more from cleaning it than shooting it with a .22lr

I shoot the copper plated stuff because after many many thousands of rounds I've noticed it to be more reliable(plated bulk pack vs. non plated bulk pack)

Your friend is full of crap. Just think of how many millions of rounds of non plated .22lr are shot every year. I will admit that some guns prefer one make of ammo over another but, that's up to the owner to figure out. Some of the best, most expensive, most percise ammo on the market is not plated.

Also, don't clean your .22s too often. It can do more harm than good.

Thanks everyone for the input. I'm off to shoot more of my .22lr lead nose bulk pack ammo later today.
