    Questions regarding Ruger SR-22

    Hello everyone,

I am getting a Ruger SR-22 for my 19th birthday, i have never owned a gun before nor has any of my family members. Therefore, i know every little if anything about guns & shooting, and was unable to find all the answers in the best thread & new member section, so i listed some of my questions here(many are very basic), hopefully you can help me.

    1. I want to learn the basics about my SR-22 (its history, components, how to care for it, etc), where can i get these information (website/videos/books)

2.The stock SR-22 doesn't have a sight/optic, what should i get that will help me in the basic marksmanship training? (I will most likely shoot targets within 50-100 yards, my budget is about 100$)

    3. What is a good intro course to basic marksmanship? (websites or videos)

    4. For the SR-22 owners, what else should i consider getting for my SR-22 other than a sight? (do i need additional rail, mag...)

Thank you for your help. May you have a wonderful holiday season.

    1) Ruger should have this info and it should come with your gun, if not (which i seariously doubt) you might be able to find it online (wikipedia maybe?)

2)bushnell offers great optics that should fit your SR-22. you can get $200 scopes on ebay for around $80. Don't go with the rimfire versions though, their never very good. get something with variable magnification.

    3) you can't really learn much about shooting from reading and watching videos, you have to go out and do it. There's sure to be some calgunners in your area. Ask them if they wouldn't mind going to the range with you and teaching you a thing or two. Most of them would be happy to. (if you come up to Chico i'll be happy to help). If you can find a copy, try reading "Sniper, Counter Sniper" by Mark V. Lonsdale. Other than that, you can google some rifle courses in your area, be prepared to spend about $150-$200 just on the course, and another $100 or so in gear...also, most courses dont cater to .22's so finding one might be difficult (another reason reaching out to calgunners is your best bet)

    4) i don't have an SR-22, but i can tell you the best thing to buy is more mags. It's a pain always having to reload the same mag over and over. Other than optics and mags, get whatever you think makes your rifle look and feel the way you want it to. Remember to take it serious though and not treat it like a toy...it's not one.

hope this helps, remember, dont be afraid to reach out to fellow calgunners. Most are range bums anyways who talk guns 24/7 so it's not like they'll be going out of their way to help you. Happy holidays, and WELCOME TO CALGUNS!!!

Most civilization is based on cowardice. It's so easy to civilize by teaching cowardice. You water down the standards which would lead to bravery. You restrain the will. You regulate the appetites. You fence in the horizons. You make a law for every movement. You deny the existence of chaos. You teach even the children to breathe slowly. You tame.

IrishPirate, Thank you for taking the time to help me,
In your opinion, what kind of optic should i get? iron sight vs red dot vs laser? (i have no preference, due to the fact that i have never dealt with any of them)

Yuna12 you are picking a great rifle, you are getting the best of both worlds. The internals and barrel are 10-22 ruger natives and the external stocks, rails, sight choices are AR-15 friendly.

        Go here

On the top of the page there is a search section type in SR-22 and you will get the accessories section.
So they have rails that you can add to the front stock. The front stock is drilled and tapped. depending on what you will be doing with the rifle the rails will give you the options you will need.
The butt stock is a standard mil spec tube so you can replace the butt stock if you want with an aftermarket AR butt stock. As for scopes that will depend on what your overall plan is, so i would say start with a Bushnell or Burris and dont spend alot of money. U can get a 3x9 scope for $60 easy.

Take a Hunter's Safety course, even if you don't plan to hunt, you'll gain a great deal of basic gun knowledge. It's a good start.
