I wonder why Ruger doesn't offer the Single Six .17 with convertible cylinders? .17 HMR and .17 Mach 2. Is there some technical aspect of the Mach 2 that prevents this? Or is it just, 'Why bother, the .17 mach2 isn't that great anyway'.?

Single Six Convertible - .17 HMR & .17HM2 ?
It cannot be inherited, nor can it ever be purchased.
You and no one alive can buy it for any price. It is impossible to rent and cannot be lent.
You alone and our own have earned it with...Your sweat, blood and lives. You own it forever.
The title is....."United States Marine".

Ruger did offer it for a year or two, but there was a problem with the head space on the mach 2. To great of a distance from the tip to the start of the barrel. The tip would not enter the barrel correctly at that high speed. Thus causing a potential catastrophic failure. I wanted one too, because of the lower cost of ammo.
