Range Report: Walther P22
Today I got the time to shoot my new Walther P22. I got up at 5AM and headed to the local mountains which are about 50 miles east of downtown San Diego. It was slightly rainy but still beautiful out.
I did not clean the gun before I fired it, just brought it straight from the box.
Ammo
I shot a total of 200 rounds through it.
150 CCI mini-mag: zero malfunctions
30 Federal bulk from walmart: 1 failure to feed
20 Winchester XpertHV bulk from walmart: 5 failure to feeds
I was very pleased with these results. I figured the winchester would have problems which it did, but I was surprised how well the federal ran. I also expect that after the gun is broken in it will feed much better. I should also point out that I was rapid firing when the 1 federal round jammed. Most of my time shooting was either double taps or seeing how fast I could empty the mag.
Accuracy
When I did slow down a little to how accurate the pistol was I was also pleasantly surprised. From reviews that I have read online I expected it to be very hard to hit anything because of the sight radius (5 in.) and weight of the gun. This was not the case. I was able to hit a tennis ball from about 20 yards about 1/2 the time.
The trigger was not that impressive, but decent. The double action pull is around 12 lbs (I couldn't hit a barn double action). The single action is around 5 lbs and felt pretty nice. It certainly didn't negatively effect the accuracy too bad.
Also should be noted that the barrel is fixed which also probably helped with the accuracy.
Feel
The ergonomics of the P22 are awesome. The gun felt like a natural extension of my arm and the grip melted into my hand. The mag with the extended pinky grip also made the gun more comfortable to hold. The pistol weighs in at a very lite 15 oz.
My only complaint of the feel is the mag release which they put at the base of the trigger gaurd. I got use to it pretty fast though. Also the gun will not fire without a mag inserted which I don't care for although it is an easy fix which I will do when I get around to it.
Cleaning
It broke down fairly simply and was easy to clean. Re-assembly was more complicated but do-able with the plastic dowel that came with the pistol.
Overall Impression
Overall I was pleased with the Walther P22. More than anything it was a blast to shoot, which after all is very important in a plinker. It's defiantely not a tack driver, but I don't think anyone is trying to market it as that either. I can't get over how cool it looks and feels. And for the $329 that I spent on it, I feel like I got a decent gun for the money.
