    Smith &Wesson 15-22 or Ruger SR22?

Well, I have been going back and forth over this for some time and have yet to make up my mind. Like the thread title implies, I have been trying to decide between the Smith & Wesson and the Ruger offerings for a "tactical" .22.

In my mind, the pros to the Smith are that it pretty accurately mimics the form and function of an M4 platform. It is easily accessible for cleaning and breakdown is just like the M4. I can get them locally for $409 plus fees. The inclusion of sights and full rails is a plus. The negatives are the polymer construction and the question of longevity and reliability in the long run.

The Ruger is a 10/22 in a fancy aluminum suit. it is harder to access than the Smith for cleaning and maintenance and it does not have full rails or iron sights (both are available for extra money). The pros are that it is full metal construction and has the tried and true history of the Ruger 10/22. Parts and upgrades for this rifle are readily available. I can get this one locally for $485 before fees.

Which one would you lean towards and why?

S&W because it feels and functions like an AR.

I got the SR-22 as I had a bunch of 25 round magazines already. $489 plus tax and fees. I also liked the very solid construction of the Nordic kit, the easy access to upgrades and parts, and the know reliability of the action.

The S&W was a very close 2nd when I was looking. The magazine issue was the final nudge to the Ruger.

Local is Orange County and the dealer is a local LE only gun store.

S&W all the way. The Ruger is nice but the bolt does not hold open after the last shot. The saftey is just like the 10/22 and I perfer the controls of the AR which is exactly what the S&W has. I pick mine up today with no magazine. ARRRGGGGG!! That is the only thing the Ruger has over the Smith. My old aftermarket 30 rounders are useless but I can still have fun with my 10/22.

Bolt hold open on a 10/22 is an easy fix.

Indeed I am, I just figured that I didn't want to name them without saying LE only to keep people from calling them or stopping by since they don't even let you in the door without a badge. Cool place though.

True, but the bolt hold-open kits for 10/22's have a couple issues that the S&W doesn't:
                          1) Need to modify the mags for it to work (or buy the pre-modified mags).
                          2) Bolt still closes when you pull out the mag.

I never saw the point. Ruger made the 10/22 (like the Mk series) so that the firing pin won't peen the chamber when dry-fired so it doesn't add any protection. And you still have to rack the bolt when you load a new mag. [shrug]

Sorry. I read "bolt release", not "hold open". The auto bolt release is an easy mod. Not having to do the funky finger manipulation to release your bolt once it's locked back was a pet peeve for me.

Ahh, true that. The bolt release is for sure on my purchase at same time as gun list for 10/22's. The standard release is REALLY annoying.

This is the hold open kit. It is the only one I know about.
