Well, I have been going back and forth over this for some time and have yet to make up my mind. Like the thread title implies, I have been trying to decide between the Smith & Wesson and the Ruger offerings for a "tactical" .22.
In my mind, the pros to the Smith are that it pretty accurately mimics the form and function of an M4 platform. It is easily accessible for cleaning and breakdown is just like the M4. I can get them locally for $409 plus fees. The inclusion of sights and full rails is a plus. The negatives are the polymer construction and the question of longevity and reliability in the long run.
The Ruger is a 10/22 in a fancy aluminum suit. it is harder to access than the Smith for cleaning and maintenance and it does not have full rails or iron sights (both are available for extra money). The pros are that it is full metal construction and has the tried and true history of the Ruger 10/22. Parts and upgrades for this rifle are readily available. I can get this one locally for $485 before fees.
Which one would you lean towards and why?
