    Remington 40X question

I recently aquired a REmington 40X target .22 single shot bolt action rifle with open target sights.
I don't know much about it and was hoping someone here could help me out. What's the history? How much is it worth? And anything else about it

    thanks

the remington 40x is arguably the most accurate factory rimfire rifle ever produced and very sought after (I have one on order with cmp) . One in like new conditon can sell for $1300-1400 or more, ex military version sell for a little less . as always its all about condition and were you are at that moment in time . The above prices were prior to the recent release of rifles by the cmp and this will hurt the prices for a while , I would expect the cmp rifles to go fast.

          thanks again for the reply

I don't know much but that they were a Remington Custom Shop rifle based on the 722 or the 700. In the 70's I saw one for around IIRC 550.00. Sadly I did not have the bucks and bought a cheap gun that sits idle today. Because they are based on a big rifle they are highly sought after. Some Sporter versions and repeaters and low production number rifles will bring big prices. I would visit over at rimfirecentral.com and post a pic with serial number and someone will tell you the day and time of day that your rifle was born. They know these rifles.
Any Annie will out shoot them for half the money.

Remington 40X models were all made in Ilion, New York, where Remington has been since the early 1800s. Production started in 1955 and continues today through Remington's Custom Shop.

They are probably the most accurate American made, production, bolt action rimfires made. The prices will dip a little bit because the CMP just sold thousands of them. Guns in premium conditon will always hold value though.
