    Help pick a Ruger 10/22

I may be getting a Ruger 10/22 soon but I can't decide which model to get. I dig the synthetic stock with black matte but I am not sure how well that will stand up to rusting.
Also in mind is the synthetic stock with stainless steel barrel ,however, aesthetically I dislike the silver SS color.
I will keep the Ruger stock all the way. Keep in mind that my hand sweat daily so which one should I pick?

it shouldnt rust if you wipe it down with a silicone rag after use. and clean occasionally.

if you hands sweat heavily... get the SYN stock.

the SS barrel isn't really silver. they coat them with a grey coating so it doesn't even shine like the older models do. cause i have the black syn stock w/ SS barrel and yea not what i thought.... it was grey all around. they even painted the inside of the receiver with that paint and it flakes off from firing so clean after every use initially until it stops flaking so it doesn't clog the firing pin, extractor, and w/e else it can clog up.

i think i'm ready to make the jump into the realm of rimfire.... i hear that shooting target with a 10/22 is great practice reading the wind for my matches out at longer ranges with other rifles....
i'm definitely getting a 10/22- probably a target model..... just happy to be here!

If you are in the market for a 10/22 do your self a favor and look for an older used one.. The new ones are all painted with cheap non stick paint.. in other words the paint don't stick to what they put it on... The receiver you can strip and repaint or have it powdercoated. The barrel on the other hand is a different story.. The so called stainless barrel is in fact a flat look paint.. not true stainless.. the same is true for the so called blued look barrel as they are painted to. Also the trigger is housing is made of plastic. I am not sure if it an issue or not as I have not used one with this trigger.

If you like the composite stock and the stainless barrel look you can always get an aftermarket barrel or, if stock is what you fancy, there are always real stainless barrels up for sale that others have taken off to upgrade theirs. I have a couple of real stainless barrels that I have taken off mine and upgraded.

You can work around the looks of the new 10/22's if you are like most people and end up taking everything off and only using the receiver. If you want a stock rifle then get an older one or a new one and replace with older parts, but that involves more cost and all you end up with is the same rifle you started with just with old parts.

I guess it all depends on the look you want and what you want in the end.
Good luck on which ever path you take.

I got the regular wood target model (didn't like the feel of the factory syn stock), then changed it to the hogue stock(much better than factory and lighter than the wood), which I am very happy with. i have a newer model and the coating inside the action has flaked off after 1000+ rounds, kinda bummed but other than that, a great little gun. Also added the bushnell 22 scope, and I don't really mind the plastic trigger. but to each his own.

If you look at the Ruger web site there was at one time some models that came with real stainless barrels but I am not sure what they offer now in terms of a real stainless gun.. As for the receiver, I don't think they ever where stainless. I believe that they are brushed aluminum. You can get the same look out of the new receivers by stripping the paint off and refinishing them in a durable clear paint or get it clear powder coated. Most of the new carbines and sporters are to the crappy painted type. I am not sure but there new tactical version and target versions, at least on there web site are shown in a black bull barrel but I cant tell if it is blue or painted black. I didn't see a stainless target model listed in the part of the site I was in.. but there may be one.

I've been reading and it seem that Ruger 10/22 production with the new polymer trigger guard begin around 350 to 351-xxxx serial numbers. I'm looking for a new 10/22 with the metal trigger guard and such. Still thinking there are some left in stores?

When I bought my Ruger 10/22 in Jan of 2008, they had already started putting polymer TGs into the supply chain.

The chances of finding a new one on a shelf unsold since then is highly, highly unlikely.

Like the post above, good luck on finding a new one unless it is a never shot used one. Production of the current poly trig. and crap paint guns hit the stores almost two years ago, at which time you could still see the older style guns but they have been snapped up long ago.. Like I said before look for a nice used one and you will not pay any more than a new one and you will have the better finish on the receiver and barrel. As for the trigger I have never used the poly type so I cant comment.
