    10-22 goodies?

im looking at getting a bare bones 10-22 one of these days, and im just wondering if there are any "must have" accessories/parts/upgrades. also i remember reading that the new ones arent as reliable as the older ones, so would it be better to look for a used one as opposed to brand new? oh and im a sucker for wood stocks, so i wouldnt even consider changing the stock for any fancy composite version. thanks.

First you are chopping up historic vintage rifles and sticking them in cheap and nasty looking plastic "dildo" stocks that look like some kind of futuristic sex toy that gay space aliens stick up each other's butts.

Tech Sights (www.tech-sights.com) are a must. I just clumsily scattered all the parts of my trigger assembly trying to install some upgrade parts, but if you're a bit more handy than me, an auto bolt release and an extended mag release are quite handy. Both are actually quite easy to drop in, but I was dumb and accidentally pushed out a different retaining pin than I was supposed to.

The new ones have a plastic trigger housing and trigger guard. They are also very poorly finished.

The older ones are highly desirable being considered a superior product.

The *MUST* have out of the box is trigger upgrade. The sear makes all the difference. A volquartzen or powercustom sear will clean up the heavy trigger for about $35. An aftermarket buffer is nice. It really quiets the the action when it cycles. The sear makes a significant difference along with the trigger return spring being modded. Most people are happy at this point, but for some, aftermarket trigger from kidd or volquartzen is expensive but nice.

After that, everything is gravy.... but sky's the limit. Green mountain barrel, kidd trigger, bedded free floated, bolt trued and jeweled.... etc. A lot of things can be done yourself if you're mechanically inclined.

Go to "rimfire central" and read the threads in the tips and tricks section.

bolt buffer and a little work on the factory trigger parts for budget minded. try to find an older model as others have suggested...prefer sub 1980 models.
WTT: would like to buy/trade a springfield armory mc operator .45 1911.

I have old ones and new ones... It is easier to take the trigger creep out of the new ones... Do the auto bolt release mod and they are cool almost stock... CHEAP great fun!!

Yes, new or old..... old.... If your a sucker for wood stocks then you will need to find an older one. Or at least get an older stock as the newish birch ones have a stock that looks like they took a bunch of scrap wood and ground it all up and formed it into a stock, kinda like that formed beef jerky...

There are some very nice old stocks of the walnut persuasion to be had. They can be a little pricey. But the ones from the guns dated until the mid 90's still look nice.. with some decent grain. Good luck and lets see some pics when you get one...

on a budget : auto bolt release and a Volq. hammer (reduces the trigger pull substanchal) and a bolt buffer if you feel like...

i think midway still has the auto bolt release / hammer in a kit on sale....

also if you buy a new one. you wont be needing an extended mag release as it comes with one..... its not the same flat style as the older models.

Good advice. The bolt release is the best mod you can do to a 10/22. And you don't have to buy one, you can just dremel the one you have to mod it.

2nd best mod is a new hammer. This can drastically reduce the terrible 8 lb trigger pull these rifles are notorious for. A new hammer can reduce to pull down to to around 3 lbs.

3rd best mod = bolt buffer. Why Ruger thinks it's OK for the bolt to smack against metal is beyond me. Plus they only cost a few bucks.

Picatinny rail up top for any/all goodies you may want to mount including scope, red dot, rear sights. Good stock like a Fajen silhouette stock or a predator gun stock, a good .920" barrel like a green mountain, Tac sol, Volquartsen or many others. A decent trigger like a volquartsen or Kidd trigger group. After you have about 1k into it after the initial purchase, you'll laugh and ask why you didn't buy a Kidd rifle complete from the start!

BTW its kind of like BRD only much more expensive and justifiable by shooting dirt cheap ammo!
