    Shooting Sticks

I have scoped 17hmr and 22 wmr rifles. I've been shooting them from the bench. When I try to shoot them free-hand standing up, it's hard to steady the aim, so I want to try shooting sticks.

Are the shooting sticks any good? Are they as steady as benchrest? Anyone hunted with them?

I'm looking at the ones in Walmart.

Dont get the ones at walmart they are junk. You can make your own that will work okay or get the ones from online.

They are great and well proven. I have used them and am a firm believer in them.

here is some for sale on Ebay but you can find them cheaper used.

I like Stoney points shooting sticks, they can be adjusted for shooting from sitting or standing positions. Make sure the sticks you use are tall enough to get you above the brush in the areas you hunt.

        "Off hand" with shooting sticks

I can't imagine that you will ever be able to shoot as well with sticks as you do from a bench...the general rule is: "the closer to the ground the more stable and the more accurate." Prone with a bipod or over a pack is best, then sitting then kneeling and finally off hand and even then a supported off hand is better than no support. But, having said that, you can achieve an acceptable level of hunting accuracy using sticks. I am still saving up to hire a few trackers to run ahead of me and plant the sticks in the ground when I get a shot...just like on the Hunting Channel!!!!! 30-338

PS +1 on the stoney point! Make sure you practice a lot with them....and then practice some more!
