Someone I know is looking to put on a NRA .22 rimfire steel silhouette match at the Sacramento Valley Shooting Center http://www.sacvalley.org/
About the only matches of this type right now are all in the SF bay area, and I'm just looking to gauge interest in the Sacramento area.
While this would be a regulation NRA event, I'm pretty sure they would allow new shooters with equipment that doesn't quite conform, just to get people out there and participate.
There's 2 classes of rifles. Silhouette class and hunter class. If you go to this link at the Sunnyvale gun club they have an extensive explanation of the equipment, the match, how it's run and so forth.
