Henry H002B Survival .22LR

Anyone have any experience or thoughts on the Henry H002B Survival Rifle. The barrel and action breaks down and stows away into the stock. I'm thinking it would be a nice rifle for a BOB.

They are great as a survival gun, but they're very crude. Don't expect great accuracy or function.

What do you want it for? What do you expect it to be able to do? Are you looking for a compact .22lr that floats? If so, this is your best option. If you are looking for a slightly less compact and heavier "survival gun" look at the Springfield M7s. If you want a light weight plinker that can be broken down for compact carry, my choice would be an old Winchester '06. I'm not big on buying new .22lrs since, I can find better quality used guns cheaper than the lessor quality new guns. Hell, you can find a used 10-22 for $150 if you look hard. You do not need to do a thing to it and it would be a better investment than a Big5 Marlin or Savage.

I'm keeping my eye out for a gun that could be broken down for compact carry for a BOB and something that I could shoot (inexpensively) at the local range for fun, maybe be the introductory firearm for the daughter. New or used doesn't matter to me. It seems that the newer "out of the box" .22lrs aren't as good as the older ones.

I also have a Henry Survival rifle. They need to be kept really clean and are very fussy on the ammo it will feed reliably. Work out which .22LR ammo your rifle likes and keep it clean, and they will function just fine. The sights are basic but accurate enough out to 50yds.

There are more reliable and more accurate .22s out there, but none of them break down into a small package that fits into a small back pack and only weighing 2.5lbs. The Papoose is nearly 1lbs heavier. It does a good job for the function it was designed for, and is not what you want in your hand if you are fighting off hordes of zombies. If you want a plinker that can be broken down, the Marlin Papoose would be a smarter choice.

As you probably know these were designed by Armalite for the USAF in 1959 as the AR-7, issued as an air crew survival rifle to shoot small game with. For coolness factor, the AR-7 was used as sniper rifle (in .25 Cal) by James Bond in the movie "From Russia with Love".

I have on and yes it is very picky about which ammo it likes. I just found it fun to totally convert it to an EBR.

I just picked up one of these recently.



It's a Savage Model 24C "Camper" Series S.

It's a .22LR over a 20 gauge single shot model and it weighs 6 lbs. 1 oz (just weighed it). It has a cool trapdoor buttstock that holds 2 - 20 gauge shells and 10- .22lr rounds. This model is capable of firing 2 3/4 and 3 inch shells as well, where as the earlier models I've seen only fire 2 3/4 inch shells.

I bought it to take with me when I got hiking and backpacking to get some game I might happen to come across. It's capable of taking down anything in CA as well so it's a nice all around survival rifle and worth the added 13 oz over the Marlin. The Henry has it beat hands down at 2.5 lbs though. This is an older model and the newer ones Savage makes weigh a bit more. I got mine on GunBroker.

given the bump, i love my ruger 10/22 with butler creek folder.. i dont know what the op means by the 10/22 comment, but it is the best 22 ive ever shot, and it was about $300 with the new stock purchased separately...
