Is there a 22 lr., conversion or dedicated, that functions like a normal AR?

Hello everyone, I couldn't figure out how to find the answer to this question with the search function. Basically I would like to find a .22 lr rifle that operates just like a normal AR. I was looking either for a full rifle or a dedicated upper. Something with AR looking Magazines would be a plus. Is the Model 1 Kit any good? I heard the Colt 22 wasn't that good.

I just got the Model1 but have not had a chance to properly test it. It runs HV ammo only, so my Eley Sport and Remi Target doesn't cycle properly with only 105 ft-lb.

It's fairly good, I'd say. Having a dedicated barrel is nice. Somehow, it feels flimsier than my White Oak upper. I forgot my mag (doh!) the one day I bought it out, so was hand loading each round and only put about 8 rounds down.

I do wish it came with a hooded rear as I was having problems with sight picture due to lights from behind in the range. Mine was shooting low and left out of the box. I haven't fiddled with the sights yet, but hopefully that's just a sight adjustment thing and nothing major.

My next ammo trials will be Federal Auto Match or something else is the 130 ft lb energy area. Hopefully that stuff will cycle properly without requiring spring replacements. I really don't want to change anything on my trigger.

          S&W M&P .22 about....... $500

          Spikes Upper/Lower basic...... $1200 plus

Shooting all day at the range because ammo is cheap....priceless.

Which version of the Model 1 did you get? I was thinking of getting the 16 inch CAR version. There was an article in Shotgun News several months ago (wife cleaned up MY bathroom and tossed it out) that did a write up of various conversions and they gave the Model 1 good marks.

S&W are now selling a version of the .22 AR-15 patterned M&P15-22 that is compliant with Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey and New York law.

I got the 20" chrome moly barrel with CMP freefloat tube, A2 NM rear sight, NM front sight. It was $688 shipped. I would order now if you want one though. It took 5 months to receive mine.

I bought it in preparation for service rifle, and also to shoot a local smallbore league. I have yet to test it, but I'm hoping it'll stay in the 10 ring on an A-17 at 50ft. Will report back when I get some more time to test it.

I don't know how many threads now I've defended the Colt M4, but I'll do it again. As a dedicated .22LR, I love it. I've put about 3000 rounds through it so far, and have had no problems. Accurate as hell. A couple misfires that I blame on the ammo. CCI MiniMags has been the guns best friend. My only complaint is the weight of the trigger pull, but now that the gun has been on the market for a little bit, fixes are starting to pop up for that too.

The S&W M&P 15 looks like it's going to be a cool rifle, but I like the metal construction and the attention to detail that the Colt offers (front sight and forward assist, even though its just for show)

                  Here's mine:

But in the end it's personal preference, so best of luck in your search.

I have the S & W and I love it. The S & W is closer to an AR platform. Just the fact that it has a working bolt release instead of a fake button was enough for me, it uses an AR trigger group and take-down is very easy. I have put different ammo through and it shoots everything and shoots it accurately. Handle both and then make a decision. The S & W should be here next month.

The bolt will hold open on the last round but that is due to the magazine follower which is nice, but prevents the magazine from dropping free and results in the bolt going forward when the magazine is removed.

Until someone figures out how to modify the bolt catch to work on the .22LR uppers the closest you are going to get function wise to a centerfire AR is the Smith and Wesson.

The Model 1/Spikes/CMMG/TacSol/etc. are all great but, like Suvarov said, none of them will have functional bolt hold opens or bolt releases.

The Colt/Umarex has a bolt hold open, but the bolt release is just for show. To release the bolt, you pull pack and release the charging handle. That said, the mags are very nice. They might not look like real AR mags, but they are easy to load because of this. Black dog mags get very very VERY tiresome to load.

Never handled one so I can't say this with certainty, but I hear the S&W M&P15-22 has a functional bolt hold open and release. It also supposedly has a std AR trigger group allowing you to use quality aftermarket triggers.

I think the M&P15-22 is the best sounding option so far
