COLT 22 M-4/Thought about buying

After reading all the posts here good/bad--I was really wanting one of these.
Well last night I went and looked at one,handled it,looked at it again, and you
know I really DON'T want it now. I really wanted the regular carry handle short version--the one I handled had some funky handguards and a rail,which I do not personally care for,(maybe I just need to handle the regular one and see what I think at that point)?? I like the reports about how it shoots and
it sounds like a great plinker but after picking it up and handling it--something
just isn't there.I'm glad I didn't buy one BEFORE actually feeling/holding it.
I mean no disservice to those that have them and I am glad they are
accurate, function well,and they are a BARGAIN pricewise. Pete

I have the M4 Carbine version (the one with the carry handle) and I love it. I have never felt a .22 LR gun that felt quite like it. It shoots fantastically and having the option of taking off the carry handle is cool, even if I don't plan on ever putting an optical sight on it. This gun is one of the best $600.00 I have ever spent.

The bottom rifle is the same rifle with the MOE kit. Shoot one, it will changed your mind.

I take it you shot a Colt M4 22LR? How many rounds and at what range(yds)?

Amazing how many people will give opinions on firearms they have not shot...

I have only the experience with the Colt.

Colt Range report

I picked up my Colt AR .22 last Monday. Took it to an indoor range on Tuesday and test fired it with 5 or 6 different brands of .22 lr ammo. I didn't have any Remington golden to test but tried it with Rem. Thunderbolts. All brands of ammo used worked fine. After firing 'about' 200-300 rounds of ammo the bolt felt like it was slowing down and the rifle wasn't happy. I put the rifle aside and shot other guns for awhile. I decided to try the Colt again and loaded up a couple of mags. The bolt seemed to have recovered and wasn't 'draggy' anymore and the rifle shot fine. The range I was at doesn't allow rapid fire, so I emptied my mags with slow aimed fire. Functioning and accuracy was fine with the exception of a couple of rounds failing to fire. Inspection of the rim of the ftf round showed a solid firing pin indentation. Reloading and re-firing the same round had no effect, the round still didn't go off with a second hit. I didn't have another .22 rifle or pistol to try it with, but I'm guessing that the .22 lr. I was using had old age issues as both my Ruger 10/22s had the same problems with this ammo last spring when I went varmint hunting.

I took the rifle home and gave it a good cleaning (as much as you can with the gun's limited amount of disassembly). I went to an outdoor shooting area today and fired the Colt again. This time the only issue I had was with the ammo again, solid firing pin indents but ammo not firing. What's kind of ironic is this only happened on slow fire. When I 'bump' fired the Colt (Look it up on You Tube) the Colt emptied the entire magazine without a hiccup. The Colt seems happier when fired fast. There were no issues with the bolt 'slowing' down. That must have been a breaking in thing.

Although the Colt was a hit with the other guys who tried it out at the range, most said they were waiting for the S&W version because of the cheaper price. I like the Colt fine, but can understand the price issue and all things considered, would have been fine buying the S&W.

All of us thought that one or all of the manufacturers should think about making these lookalike AW's in .22 mag. to give it a little extra oomp!
When the Sig 522 comes out, I'll consider buying one, but since I have the Colt already, it'd have to be because I had a lot of extra money...but you guys know how that goes.

My Colt M4 22lr had the same issue on it's first night out to the range. With Federal Value Pack. However when I reloaded the round in and it did fire on the second time.

I think mine needed a good lube job and cleaning. It seemed the bolt was not going 100% into battery on occasion (by maybe 1/8 on an inch) and that might have been the problem. Anyway I cleaned and lubed it since and will have it out next weekend. See how it goes.

If you are on the fence, like I am, just wait a year. I suspect in the near future there will be many more 22 LR only assualt weapons being manufacutred. These two models have done very well and others are likely to follow such as Uzi's, Mac 10's, M60's, more ARs.

Early adapters set the pace. The guys who went out and let the manufacturers know that there was a good market for decently made .22 tacticool trainers by voting with their wallets when they bought GSGs. The manufacturers are following the money.

I waited for the verdict on the GSG-5, when it first came out, it was derided for being an airsoft clone, but when my experienced out of state gunny friend gave it his blessing (he can afford and buy anything he takes a fancy to), I thought about buying one. When the Colt .22 M-4 came out, I knew I'd rather have the M-4 more than I did the GSG-5, I wanted an AR for a low cost ammo trainer since I couldn't afford to feed my AR for $ 20 and shoot 500 rounds a session. That $ 20 might've got me 20 rounds.

I already waited my year and added to the people who voted with their wallets. Now if we could convince them to chamber a tacticool rimfire in .22 mag.

I didn't think twice either, did a little research (which included your extensive thread on the M-4)...but I can't honestly say I love it. It's just okay for me, I don't like the way it breaks down or doesn't break down for cleaning. The non-functional bolt release kind'a bugs me too, otherwise accuracy and function are good.
