savage rimfire accurizing

Hello all,

Ive posted this on rimfirecentral and wanted to post it here as well. I've got a savaage MKII MAKO that is shooting about 1" at 50 yards and I would like it to be more accurate. I was thinkinb about sending it to these guys http://www.savagegunsmithing.com/Acc...ge_Rifles.html
For $139 he will recrown, glass bed, work the trigger over, and smooth up the bolt components. My savage does ok but doesn't really do what I would like it to. I may be asking too much but I would like to shoot 3-5 shots and have them all touchin.

What do you all think?
anybody use them? have other ideas etc?

Does yours have the Accutrigger? If it does then it won't get much better if not it can be improved but I would just get a aftermarket setup. Some of the trigger mods I have seen on rimfirecentral look a little funky to me.
Does it need a recrown? Unless damaged I can't imagine a Savage rimfire that needs a recrown from the factory, seems a waste and then what do you do with the bare crown, that could get ugly.
Bedding doesn't seem to popular so my quess is it doesn't produce a large change for the better on these guns.
Bolt smoothing is fine and can be done yourself with info from rimfirecentral but it won't make it more accurate, just work smoother.
I suggest you spend the money on better bench equipment like bags or rest. What scope are you using? 1"" is ok if using irons but with a decent scope with a good fit you shoud be near one hole. You should be getting better groups at 50yrds but not a lot better. So why not Practice, Practice and then Practice its cheap and fun.
What model and scope set up do you have.
Save your money and trouble and make sure you are comfortable and steady behind the gun first.

Is the barrel free floating already? If not it would be simple to float this yourself. Otherwise the first place I would look is at ammunition. High Velocity ammo tends to be less accurate, so stick with standard velocity only for target shooting. You really have to try everything if you haven't already. Some ammo that tends to get good results in a variety of guns is CCI Standard Velocity, Wolf Match Target (same as SK Jagd Standard Plus), & RWS Rifle Match among several others. The right ammo can cut your group in half if you do your part.

to answer a few questions I can't see anything wrong with the crown but I keep getting some random flyers. I had the gun back at the factory for headspace problems and it produced a flyer from them as well. I know its not benchrest quality stuff but I have a caldwell rest for the front and have a nice solid rear rest as well (not bags but it keeps it solid). the scope I'm using is a vortex crossfire in 6-24x50 its nice and clear and have no problems seeing but has pretty good groups without the flyers. the flyers are killing me. I have tried win expert bulk and the federal bulk, as well as american eagle 40 and 38 gr bullets. also tried wolf match target and some remmington target in plastic 100 rd boxes... instead of using an accurizing service should I just jump into a better barrel?

as far as comfort level I am able to shoot my howa 1500 223 into 1/2 " groups and occasionally down to 1/4" groups at 100 yards. a number of times Ive seen the bullets after pulling the trigger and they don't hit where I'm aiming and seem to have a strange flight path.

I would be total happy with my gun (MAKO MKII) if the flyers could be stopped.

Your savage should be able to do better at 50yards just the way it is..
So before you spend anymore money sort this out first.

The cause could be many things...

Is the scope and rings all seated and tightened correctly?
Wind?
Maybe even you..

I have a Savage .17hmr with accutrigger and it shoots really well at 50yards, but I get flyers at 100 yards because of the wind..

There was a guy next to me shooting a Volquartzen 17hmr and he was frustrated at 100yards..again because of wind.

With my MKll I find that bulk ammo throws some fearsome flyers. I have chronoed many types of mid priced target ammo. RWS target rifle in the red box is the best reasonable priced I have seen. Just under a 1000fps and low standard deviation, around 6.1, out of a couple of different rifles no flyers. Check Midwayusa for 50 round boxes to try.
I wouldn't change the barrel without first checking to see if better ammo helps. Barrels are pinned and pressed and there are not many aftermarket barrels, if any, available. Plus with the low cost of the rifle not many go that far.
Sounds like you are comfortable behind the rifle and your rest should be good enough. If that don't get you going just get a CZ452.

I have a savage MKIIBV w/ accu trigger that shoots 1/2" groups at 50 yards with blazer bulk ammo. Only mods I did to it was a cheap scope and lightened the trigger pull a bit. Doesn't sound like there's anything wrong with you rifle, but the ammo you are using. My rifle shoots tighter groups with blazer than it does with wolf match.

I've wondered if my flyers are associated with the wind but as I said even their target that they sent back had 2 really good together then 1 flyer. I've gone and inspected the crown really close and there is a couple of little dings and scratches.... I'm thinking I will get just the basic service which is bedding and recrown and see what happens from there.

Yes.

Learn to shoot in the wind and flyers usually dissappear.
