ok ive never shot .17 hmr guns before and i understand that it has a flatter trajectory so it goes a further. but i went looking for some 22lr and came up short but i saw the .17hmr and wondered why it was so huge not the casing but the actual round it looked to be bigger than a .22

The .17HMR is actually smaller than a .177 BB or Pellet. I pulled one and dropped it down the barrel of my Gamo. Just rattled on through.
I wouldn't count on it going further, just flatter. It's a necked down .22Magnum that uses a .17 bullet to go faster with better ballistics. Tiny bullet, built to centerfire match standards. Boringly accurate, I've amused myself by shooting the staples out of my friends targets.

The whole loaded cartridge itself, is bigger than a normal 22lr round. The projectile that flies out of the end though, is smaller.sigpicLord, make my hand fast and accurate.

High-velocity .22LR has a 40Grn bullet traveling at 1250ft/sec.
.17HMR has a 20Grn bullet traveling at 2500ft/sec.

Another great thing about the 17hmr is if you use regular rounds (not the V-Max), it sets off tannerite with ease, instead of having to use a more expensive cartridge.
I have a Savage 17hmr and use it with the V-Max rounds to destroy ground squirrels. Very devastating on small game. I even took out a prarie dog at 262 yards with mine. Took me 2 shots to walk it in (shooting uphill and a slight ccross wind) before I removed the little guys mid-section.
Only downside for me is they are very susceptable to wind. But most people are better shooters than I am and know how to read the winds, so they have very little trouble reaching out with these rounds.
All in all, a great round. As is the 17mach II......Comment

my marlon 17 mach 2 way outpreforms any 22 I have shot. I dont know much about guns but with a decent scope sited in I can hit 10 rounds in a quarter at 100 yardsComment
