    DIY Buckmark URX Grips

Will it shoot better with these? Who knows?

Did I learn anything making them? Yeah, making Buckmark grips is a PITA.

Not counting my time, still way cheaper than a set of Hogue URX grips.

Looks good to me. How much would they be in dollars if you had to calculate your time into the equation?

I'm not knocking it because I think they turned out really good and sometimes spending time on a project is rewarding in itself also.

Tough one. Honestly not sure how to price my time.

I guess best way to do it would be to look at it from perspective of "how much would I charge a stranger to make a set". Not that anyone would ever request that, but just in terms of "how much is my OCD stress and probably 25 hours of work with only hand tools* worth", probably about $175, which is outlandish for a set of grips.

It took me like 10 tries just to get the screw head countersinks done right. Luckily I was smart enough to do that FIRST and then trace the pattern around the 2 best ones.

*Not counting the poor-mans sanding disk, aka "belt sander in a vice".

            25 hours of work
CA minimum wage is $15.50 per hour.

That's $387.50 if you could have found a minimum wage job to do that 25 hours of work at.
Then the govt takes their cut and you are left with around $275.

Yeah, here is what the ad would look like:

              Wood Buckmark URX grips

              - Red Oak, universally reknowned as the best wood for grips.
              - Lovingly hand-crafted with Ryobi hand tools. No drill press or sanding drum shortcuts here! All tools and material locally sourced from the Home Depot down the road.
              - You must follow all necessary laws to transfer the gun to me during the construction process, then I will xfer back to you at the end. Required for custom hand-fitting. I have a good FFL who charges reasonable prices.
              - Not responsible for any left over sawdust in the gun or pencil marks on the gun.
              - Comes with stainless hex cap screws, each individually cut to length, heated with a blow-torch and dipped in motor oil for that awesome "sorta-black" finish.

All this can be yours for $387.50, plus shipping and handling and all FFL fees.

              Turnaround time, one month.

I started with a set of these, then rasped, sanded, and stained them to my liking. Still not cool as making your own from scratch though.

I am contemplating making my own grips for several revolvers I own. Not sure if this thread is motivating or not.

Not sure but I think revolver grips would be slightly easier since there is less proximity to moving parts. The big PITA about this project was the cutouts and relief in the left grip.

I think you should give it a go. And if you've got a drill press or something else that will allow you to drill screw holes perfectly at 90 degrees and do clean countersinks, that's more than half the battle.

And keep in mind OP is probably playing up the difficulty to make himself seem cooler. And I should know, I'm the OP.
