Reising 22 Pistol

Bought this at a local show yesterday for 100.00 It has issues.. First was there was a very bad attempt at a cracked slide repair.. They did such a bad job.. The thing would not even rack as they had it brazed back together so badly..It was so crooked you would not believe it.. Should have taken a pic.

So I put it in my mill.. Miilled the very bad repair.. Welded it again.. I am not completely done yet, but it is strong again.. Just going to do more cosmetic weld filling and mill work yet, wanted to just see how it worked before going further cosmetic wise..It will look much better after more fill welds and Mill work.... But it is now a working and functioning Pistol atleast.

I took it out and ran 8 rounds of CCI SV... I know they a no go for HV ammo..

It fed, and ejected all 8 rounds fine. But it had a few misfires.. I knew were firing pin related right off after seeing the marks on the unfired cases......

I came home and knocked the pin out of the firing pin retainer. And the Firing pin is broke in the front section.. So ignition was sporadic of course.. I am sure there are no firing pins to be had.. But it looks like a easy enough one to make on my Lathe.. I am confident it will run perfect after the new firing pin is made..

Someone had previously removed all the finish also.... It will stay that way now.. Not going to shoot it much anyway.. Just maybe a few mags occasionally.

Seems from my research there were only around 5000 or so of these made in variations.. With maybe the NY address the rarer ones?.. Mine has the New York address on the slide..

Also it was missing the little knob for the takedown lever.. I made one out of brass and fit it.. Never find an original I am sure.. It is still kinda a junker..But for the 100.00 I am happy to have it..

Anyway here is a pic of this kinda cool, rare and interesting Pistol.. Anyone know if they actually had a Model designation?

Yes they crack in the slide right where the narrow rails meet the larger half of the slide.. I do have the firing pin made.. It works really good.. I changed a couple things in the pin to make it better. First is a little lighter spring. Second is they did not really have a shaped tip as far as an anvil at the tip..I put one in the design.. Used A2 heat treat hardening for the pin.. You more less harden it with a torch by bringing it to a reddish orange, then after cooling, temper it back at about 400 degrees..

Well my welds started to crack again..So below is really the only option I thought was feasible to get it to be a shooter.. I only ran 50 rounds through it after the latest repair..But it ran flawless...

Here is a pic of what I thought was the best solution....

The collector value was gone from it when the slide broke and the finish stripped. The remaining value is only in the Historical aspect, and being able to be used and enjoyed..

I made some new rails and welded and pinned them over the original rails.. It does not look the greatest, but it is rock solid now.... The rails should have been made by Reising with more beef to begin with obviously, as I believe most of the slides cracked if they were actually used.. I am actually doubting the theory that HV ammo was the biggest cause of the cracks.. I think the rails were too thin when manufactured..

Anyway like I said. I ran 50 rounds through it and it works great.. I believe it can be used long term now if a guy wanted to.. The added benefit may also be in the slide being heavier..That may slow the rearward travel some too..

I did throw some cold blue on it..If cheap Birchwood cold blue has any redeeming quality's at all.. It is in that it does not look brand new and shiney, kinda has a older brown effect when done improperly,LOL
