    Got my first Ruger 10/22

It's an older model, Rugers website says it was shipped in 1994.

They sure don't make them like they use to. I went to my LGS to buy a brand new 10/22 but they had this used one for sale and I compared the two, and did not hesitate to pick up the used one.

Still will get a stainless take down model but that will be later haha.

Love it though! I put a cheap Simmons 3-9x (because I love the color) on some Monstrum rings so I can still use my irons. Can't wait to take it to the range.

Here is a little footage I took of it. I absolutely love the wood on it too.

    Some shooting footage:

Congratulations! I'm with you in that I also prefer the older Ruger 10/22s that have things like a cast metal alloy trigger guard and barrel band when I think those are both being made out of plastic these days.

but I thought I should also mention that your you tube video link is not working at this time.

Hmmm I am able to watch the video. What does it say? Does it throw an error code?

The 10-22 is a fun platform. I've found that Ruger magazines are worth the extra money.

          Nice find.

I got to go shoot it today and sight in my scope.

            Super fun!!

Only had two hiccups, the first one was a failure to feed. The bolt smashed the round pretty good and it just would not feed properly. No idea what happened, I was worried it was going to keep doing this but that was the only time it did it. It was with some SK semi auto ammo, the stuff is pretty oily so not sure if that had anything to do with that.

The second was 100% ammo related because the round also would not go off on my CZ 457.

Other than that, the Ruger ran flawlessly. I love it! I think I may upgrade the scope later on to a 4-12x but for now, the Simmons zeroed perfectly fine and I think the color looks so good on it.

            Some footage I took:

The video link is now working.

I think I just got some kind of error code message on the screen previously.

Good going, 10/22s are great fun. I've had at least one since '74, have got them for each of my 3 sons and built various configuration. They're the gateway drug to the SKS platform. I'd have a Charger to tinker with if they weren't bad juju in Kali. PAX

I?ve been a big fan of the 10/22 since my friend loaned me one back in 1980. Bought my first one in ?87. I think everyone?s should have one.

I highly recommend a Volquartsen bolt release. I?ve put them on both if my 10/22?s. It allows you to close the bolt without having to also press the separate release button under the trigger guard. Makes magazine changes a lot quicker and easier. Best $15 upgrade IMO.

                    ^ ^ ^ I'm gonna order one after I submit this post!

I put an extended mag release on mine, some Freedom Week BX-25 mags and then a BX trigger group in it. All I'd like to do after the Volqs bolt release is some good ghost ring irons. Wonder if XS Sights Systems offers something...

Congrats on your acquisition, OP. My carbine was made in '81, iirc.

                      Got my first Ruger 10/22

Look at the engraving on an old Ruger receiver, it?s very crisp and detailed and you can see a small Ruger firebird logo on it.

The new ones looks stupid. I swear the Ruger font looks like Comic Sans and it?s extremely light and obscured with paint.

                      Congrats OP you did good.

                        Right?

Volquartsen bolt release question: Are they only available as "automatic" bolt releases? How does that work.

I think so. This is the one I saw on Midway:

It just allows you to release the bolt without having to press the indent. Which I agree is ridiculous. I want to release the bolt just like 99% of other rifles.

But from what i've read, the bolt release does not hold the bolt open on the last round.

You can just dremel out the heart-shaped hole in the standard bolt release so it holds the bolt open and automatically releases when you pull back.

As for sights, what do you think about tech sights?

Stock bolt release requires you to push up on the bolt release while pulling the bolt handle back...

The modded "auto" bolt release (whether you buy one or modify your existing one with a Dremel and a grinding bit - I like the chainsaw sharpening ones myself) simply lets the bolt "catch" drop/spring back down into the trigger group when the bolt handle is pulled back. It is definitely one of the better and simpler "upgrades" available!
