Just starting competition shooting for fun

    Like the title says.
I shot one match at a local club. Official scoring but no trophies. Just bragging rights. Which as all shooters know are way more valuable than trophies due to their ability to be transported anywhere and the way they stretch whenever desired. ;-)

Didn?t win. Came in second. I have an older anschutz 54 with a bushnell scope. The rifle was owned by a friends grandfather who shot competitively in the Midwest I?m told.

    Any advice for getting started?
I used mid grade federal gold match. (I was told it was mid grade, it was the most expensive I saw in the store. So. [emoji38])

    Use Caldwell bags.

The bulls are dark and I was wondering if an illuminated reticle would help? I definitely love illuminated reticle a for hunting near dawn and dusk.

Where will I be spending my money? Better scope? Better rests? Better ammo? Looking to leverage other peoples mistakes because there?s just not enough time to make them all myself.

2nd is pretty good for your first match. Unless it was only two of you.

Your best source is the other guys that shoot with you. They are usually willing to share and help you.

And lots of practice. Try different ammo. Your Anschutz, although old, is good to go and will like a particular type and brand of ammo.

What type of match are you shooting?

It cannot be inherited, nor can it ever be purchased.
You and no one alive can buy it for any price. It is impossible to rent and cannot be lent.

I was shooting 100 yard bench rest.
      Shot a 368 out of 400.
I did beat the guy with glaucoma. [emoji38]

Very fun. Finally a real justification for owning an anschutz.

Definitely look forward to more and picking the brains of my fellow competitors.

Where are you shooting smallbore competition?

You can try all types of brands of ammo. Lapua is my favorite ammo to shoot in my Anschutz. Once you find a brand of ammo that performs well in your rifle, buy a case of 5000 rounds. I know it will be expensive but it will be worth it.

You can also work on your shooting skills by shooting offhand.

When you get dialed in with your natural-point-of-aim, breathing, trigger control and sights offhand, bench rest will feel like cheating.

When I was shooting 100 yard .22 benchrest, I used a 36x fixed power scope with a fine line target dot reticle.
Always looking for vintage Winchester and Marlin lever action rifles. Looking to sell? Know of one for sale? Drop me a line!

These are just friendly competitions at a private club. We?ll see if I get a hankering to do more organized competition.

I have an 18x scope. I could see the advantage of higher mag with the official targets. The rings in the black are subtle at distance and the center spot isn?t super distinct.

I have some tenex on the way. When I borrowed 5 off a buddy I easily had a 1? or better group.

Should help raise my score along with just plain old more experience next time.
