Can I make my own compensator?

I have a ruger 10/22 and I want to stick a copper tube over the barrel, extending past the muzzle. If I drill holes into the tube past the muzzle will that make it legal, as a compensator?
The extention will be about 5-6 inches past the muzzle, so something like this: http://www.centerfiresystems.com/COM1022-BLLONG.aspx
    wont work.
    Thanks,
    Wilson

i don't see any reason why this would be illegal but it might look nicer and easier to just buy it for 10 bucks.

Everyone opposes judicial legislation until the judiciary legislates in their favor.

Yes, you can make your own comp. But use a good quality steel, chromoly, or stainless steel. You can find some scrap or leftovers from a steel supply for pretty cheap. Don't waste your time with copper. How many parts made of copper do you see on firearms?
