    Winchester 52 "XD" serial number

Anyone familiar with Winchester 52 models in the D serial number range, but that has an "X" stamped between the last numeral of the serial and the D?

Is the "X" the same font as the "D"? Got pics? There were some prototype D's made from C's, but I have no clue how they were marked.

Best guess, and with your luck with these auction scores, I'd say that was one of the few C/D prototypes. There's some 52 experts on the WACA forums that can probably confirm that.
Yours was made in 1960, with 4786 made that year. The 52D was introduced in 1961. The US Olympic Team commissioned 10 custom 52C's in 1956, and they were the prototypes, for the prototypes, when Winchester did all the upgrades to make the 52D.

You're welcome, wish I had more for you on it. If you happen to learn anymore on it, I'd be interested to see it,...and a range report if you haven't already posted it.
