Ruger LCP II 22lr range trip :)

ok...I was reading ALL the bad reports on this little pocket rocket , was expecting jams .. lite srikes .. etc..etc..

got it home and stripped it..cleaned it..oiled the heck out of it...and had to work the safety a few hundred times to ease it up , could not snick it off with my thumb with out changing my grip.. broke in nicely..

off to the range with a wide assortment of 22lr ammo , std..hyper...cheap stuff also...
I was not disappointed at all with this little 22 , very pleased with it , only had 1 FTFeed and that was with CCI Velocitors , it did not like the WW 1300fps round nose 40grn at all , left the spent shell in the chamber every time...no use those! at least for my LCP , yours may be different
.pics of the best groups below.. CCI ar Tac 1200fps , it liked those alot ! as it did with Mini mags also.
all the other ammo worked fine , even CCI stingers (mostly), kind of a waste to use hyper stuff in such a short barrel anyway..

top group was off hand at 7yrds bottom group was also 7yds rested , all with CCI mini mags...and they worked great

I would carry this after making sure my ammo worked 100% (as best you can get with a rimfire)
    CCI mini mags...#1
    CCI AR Tac...#2
    cheap stuff for plinking...

    sorry for the crappie pic's...

Nice, glad it worked out so well for ya. The LCP II is a great design for a tiny sub-comp gun. It just works well, don’t have the 22lr but have owned the 380 version for 5 years. Over a thousand rounds through it and never an issue.

Green Grunt's experience mirrors mine last week. I've watched a lot of ballistics videos and read a lot of articles and it's pretty clear that in short barreled guns such as Ruger LCP hyper ammo such as Stingers and Velocitors have very little if any muzzle velocity advantage over plain jane HV ammo such as Mini-mags. They need longer barrels to realize their potential and are really rifle rounds. That said my little Beretta 21a simply will not cycle unless it's fed Stingers.

Thanks for the review. I'm between the SR22 and the LCP. I have a $50 sportsmans warehouse gift card itching to be spent.

With all the negative reviews out about the unreliability of this ammo I don’t understand its popularity.

I’ve read so many reviews stating it just won’t run reliably in this and that gun. I have zero interest in it. The common theme is always, I hope it will work in my gun.

No thanks it’s not a wonder bullet, it’s still just a 22. I’ll take something that has a much more proven track record.

I sent mine back to Ruger because I was getting many failures to fire. They replaced the barrel and sent it back with a statement to not use Winchester ammo. Have very few issues since and avoid Win stuff. Unfortunately, I have two lifetimes supply of Win Wildcat HV 40 grn!

What do you think the problem is with Winchester ammo ? Slightly over or under charged maybe?

the WW 1260fps worked in MY LCPII , but the WW 1300fps left the empty in the chamber every time , maybe slide speed was to fast for the extractor to get a good bite on the rim...IDK ... all the 1200 and up to 1280fps worked well with a few stand outs , both of those were CCI's.

Just took my LCP II 22 to the range for the first time a couple days ago. Pretty awesome little gun. Much better than the Walther P22 I got rid of that had to be sent back to Walther 3 times for FTF malfunctions before they finally fixed it.

I "broke it in" with 3 types of ammo. First, 50rds of Aguila Super Extra HV Hollowpoints. The very first round I chambered got hung up on the feed ramp. I dropped the mag, cleared it, reloaded, and it chambered the second time. I experienced 2 more failure to feed malfunctions with that ammo. (The bullets on the Aguila ammo had rough edges and the LCP II didn't like it.) Then, 50 rounds of CCI Mini Mag 40gr HP, no malfunctions. Then 50rds of CCI Stinger which ran amazingly through it with no issues, then the remaining 50 rounds of Mini Mag. I had 1 light primer strike on the Mini Mag on the final 50 rounds.

I say the LCP II 22 needs at least 150-200rds for a break in. And it needs to be cleaned after EVERY range trip. I was surprised how much crud I cleaned off the feed ramp and chamber after only 200rds.

I will only shoot premium ammo through it from now on (CCI Mini Mags, Stingers, Federal Punch.) It loves the high velocity stuff and the owners manual says it can handle high velocity ammo too (page 13).

The takedown pin got pretty scratched up from only 200 rounds also so that might be something to upgrade down the road. Mcarbo sells a upgraded hardened steel takedown pin for it. [PROTIP: You can use the front lip on the magazine to grab onto the takedown pin and pull it out if you don't have a screwdriver.]

As far as the trigger, I feel no need to upgrade it. It has a smooth buildup with a crisp break and short reset.

And finally, don't forget to bring the mag loader it comes with to the range with you. The magazines have sharp edges and will tear up your thumbs if you load it by hand.

We have 3 LCP II's. The only ammo they don't like is the Winchester black rounds.
