Looking for a budget package deal so looking for you guys to give me your personal first hand experience, I have 2 maybe 3 I?ve been looking at first is this ruger 10/22 carbine with scope and the second is the savage mark II FV-XP also with a scope semi auto vs bolt. even been looking at savage 93r17 17 hmr rifle

Now I?ve been using a gamo magnum 22 air rifle which is nice and gets the job done, but I?m looking for a little more ease of use and accuracy and not gonna kill my arms when I try to shoot the damn thing, usually shooting ground squirrels really bad this year, 20-50 yards nothing over 100yards, any advice

If ammo cost isn't an issue go with Savage 93, hard to beat the 10-22 though.

17hmr won't be a budget rig once you buy ammo.

You can't beat the Ruger 10/22. Unless you're hunting said squirrels @500yds+

private property, thats why I ask questions I guess, so as far as I can see lead ban doesn?t affect air rifle pellets, correct me if I?m wrong if I was to step up to a powder burner then yes lead free all day, since 22 has only a couple options and they don?t see to be very good, then 17hmr though ammo cost more getting better accuracy and down range performance correct?!

The CA lead ammo ban does not apply to air (BB/pellet) guns.

My squirrel gun. A little more than a 10/22, but something I'll keep forever. 10/22 is really tough to beat though. In an Appleseed class I took last year 90+% of the students had 10/22's. DOn't remember anyone having any issues with them. Many were stock, some heavily modded and all seemed to perform flawlessly.

My personal favorite squirrel rimfire is .22WMR for that 75-150 yards range. Under 75 yards .22lr is great. I love my Ruger 10/22 and the M77. I have a Savage centerfire that is a tack driver. Savage seems to make accurate rifles right out of the box as I have heard others say theirs are shooters too. I have been craving a CZ though. B.

I used an old Remington 514 for years until I gave it to my Nephew and bought a Ruger American rimfire .22LR and added a $200 Vortex.

With CCI mini mags any dirt digger within 100yds was mine.

I also had a CZ 457 in .17HMR. Just got costly to shoot. I sold that when I moved to Idaho.

I'm chasing squeaks 3 or 4x a year - this year 10 days straight in late March and early April.
I use a Savage 93r17 w a Boyds Barracuda stock. And a Ruger 10/22 also in a Boyds thumbhole stock. Both now wear Pride Fowler Industries rapid Reticle 3 - 12 x 42 scopes that are FFP w a tree calibrated for the 17hmr and 22lr high velocity. No dialing needed.
That said, when I first started I was using a stock 10/22 w a Nikon fixed 4x rimfire scope and it was fine albeit limited in range. Now however I am firmly in the 17hmr camp w a Volquartsen superlite, my Savage 93r17, and I just built an AR15 in 17 using an Alexander Arms upper. Burnin ammo! Lol.

I still use the 10/22 when they are thick and close (and a buckmark pistol too w a vortex venom 3moa red dot).

You can pick up some killer deals on old .22lr rifles from used gun racks in out of the way stores too.. they don't make them like they used to. I have had a lot of people make me offers on my western field (mossberg) tube fed bolt action from the 1930s, but I don't want to sell it.

With lead ammo limitation in Ca, I switched to 17 HMR for critter hunting.
