    Ruger Mark III 22/45

Recently bought a Ruger Mkiii 22/45 from a fellow Calgunner which is currently in jail. The model is the one with the integrated grips so you cannot replace the grips. From a quick google search there seems to be a grip mod that requires drilling and shaving of the frame to add 1911 style grips.

I dont have the skills or guts do this to the frame. Does anyone know a reputable gunsmith that would be able to do this? Any help would be appreciated!

Another option would be to replace the entire lower/grip portion (it?s not the ?firearm?), although it tends to be pricey.

I had the same issue with the first 22/45 I purchased. I ended up putting on a Hogue handall grip sleeve, which worked perfectly and avoided any grinding to the handle. It is a tight fit so keep that in mind if you clean your Ruger often

Recently sold the Ruger to a friend of mine and gave him an extra grip sleeve, I can ask him to take a pic of the container with the model # if you like.

Thanks, that?s not too far from me actually. Does he have a website by chance?

You?re right, I looked into this option as well. But $500 for a Volquarsten frame seems a bit unreasonable. That?s essentially double the cost I paid for the Ruger lol if I find one used for cheaper I may do this option.

That would be great and I appreciate that.

I've had a MK III 22/45 for about 15 years. I too had an issue with the molded-in grips. On one of the gun forums I used to frequent (not CalGuns) there was a guy who would machine off the grips and install two threaded inserts on each side so I could put any 1911 grips on. No serial on the frame so no problem shipping and receiving. He did a great job and I love the result.

I put fiber optic sights on it (front & rear from Ruger) and had a local gunsmith install Volquartsen hammer, trigger and spring set. Super accurate and very light trigger.

That must have been the member on Rim Fire Central, unfortunately he no longer does them. He would use a mill and did a superb job.

That looks great and exactly what I would like to do.

Bummer to hear he no longer does this work. That was going to be my next question. Thanks for the input

Yes, I think you are correct. This was done maybe 10 years ago or so and yes, he did a great job.

BTW, this MK III is THE most accurate .22 handgun I own by far. And totally reliable as well.

Here is the grip I spoke of, works really well and I have large hands. Sure beat grinding and replacing the grips. The only downside is removing the grip sleeve every time to clean the gun, well worth the inconvenience.

This is the Ruger that I sold.

I have one with the permanent grips and one with the factory removable grips. I have smaller hands and overall lime the removable grips a bit more but on the other one I have the hogue handall slip on grip as shown above and lime it just fine. I’d try that first for $12 or whatever they are and if you don’t like it you could try having it modified.
